DEVOTION: Advent Cleansing Joy

Updated 7 years ago by Beth Bondurant
The light of JOY but how hard it is to shine when we see the pain the world brings to so many.  Where is the light in Newtown or in so many corners of our world that are devastated. What are the fruits of our repentance... when we have chosen God's light of love.
A hand, a hug, a chair; our presence, our listening, our patience; our tears, our strength, our hope.  Our belongings, our generosity, our truth; our sharing, our caring, our sacrifice, our making a difference.
"Bear fruits worthy of repentance.  "What then should we do?"  they asked John. Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise. Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked, "Teacher, what should we do?"  Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.  The Soldiers also asked John, "And we, what should we do?" Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.  As the people were filled with expectation John said,  "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
In preparation and celebration of GOD WITH US even in the midst of horror we fall on our knees to pray for our own forgiveness as we, too, have brought hardship and hurt even when we "know not what we have done".  We pray for God's cleansing fire and presence to bring back the joy of our salvation.  We want to bring the light of JOY to the world in the things we say and do.         O God, forgive us. Cleanse us. Fire us up with healing and grace and help us live like the Master whose sandals we are unworthy to untie. But for the light of God's love, we often do more damage than help.  Even in our giving, we most often forget the very ones we are to serve.  Open our hearts and minds  and fill them up with understanding and intention.  Take us to the homes and hearts of others that need the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit.  Send the angels to teach us how to FEAR NOT.  Call us to the manger and set our feet on holy ground.  Even when we think we know and understand, bring us to our knees and empower us to wait and wonder... to hear and listen... to see and touch... to forgive and embrace... to be and become.         Nothing could have shown us more our need. We long this Third Sunday of Advent- CLEANSING JOY.
