Huntington City Council meets Monday, December 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Huntington City Hall. According to the City Charter, Christmas Eve is not recognized as a holiday. If there is not a quorum present, the meeting would be postponed until Wednesday, Dec. 26 at 7:30 p.m. However, during the work session Thursday, Dec. 20, members were ready to fulfill the Christmas Eve charter commitment, then propose an amendment for eliminating the requirement the next time the date falls on Christmas Eve.

To prevent a meeting on Christmas Eve --- which happens about once every ten years --- chairman Mark Bates will sponsor what amounts to a City Charter amendment. In the future, when a council meeting falls on Christmas Eve, it would be postponed until Dec. 26.

In order for the amendment to pass, there must be no opposition; otherwise, the amendment would have to be voted upon in a referendum. Should anyone object, to prevent incurring the cost of an election, the amendment will likely be withdrawn.
