CENSUS BUREAU: Revenue Grew in Most Service Sectors in 2011

The Service Annual Survey provides the most comprehensive national statistics available annually on service activity in the United States. In 2009, the survey was expanded to collect data for all service industries, capturing 55 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). The 2011 Service Annual Survey provides another year of estimates that can used to evaluate the performance of service sectors after the most recent recession.

Highlights from selected sectors include:

Utilities

--Private sector utility revenue for 2011 was $550.2 billion, an increase of 3.4 percent from $531.8 billion in 2010.

Transportation and Warehousing

--Revenue for transportation and warehousing for 2011 was $736.3 billion, up from $662.4 billion, an increase of 11.1 percent from 2010.

Information

--Information sector revenue for 2011 was $1.2 trillion, an increase of 4.6 percent from 2010.

--Within the information sector, the revenue for periodical publishers for 2011 was $39.5 billion, an increase of 2.9 percent from $38.4 billion in 2010.

--Among wireless telecommunication carriers, revenue for 2011 was $208.9 billion, up from $195.5 billion, an increase of 6.9 percent from 2010.

--In 2011, the revenue for Internet publishing and broadcasting and Web search portals was $50.4 billion, an increase of 20.8 percent from $41.7 billion in 2010.

Finance and Insurance

--Finance and insurance revenue for 2011 was $3.3 trillion, a decrease of 1.1 percent from 2010.

--Within the sector, investment banking and securities dealing had $135.5 billion revenue for 2011, down from $155.9 billion and a decrease of 13.1 percent from 2010.

Real Estate and Rental and Leasing

--Real estate and rental and leasing had $426.8 billion in revenue for 2011, an increase of 5.0 percent from $406.4 billion in 2010.

Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

--Professional, scientific and technical services revenue for 2011 was $1.4 trillion, an increase of 5.0 percent from 2010.

Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services

--Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services had revenue of $686.3 billion for 2011, up from $642.7 billion and an increase of 6.8 percent from 2010.

 Educational Services 

--Educational services revenue for 2011 was $59.2 billion, an increase of 5.9 percent from $55.9 billion in 2010.

Health Care and Social Assistance

--Health care and social assistance revenue for 2011 was $2.0 trillion, an increase of 4.2 percent from 2010.

--Within the sector, nursing care facilities had $110.3 billion in revenue for 2011, up from $105.3 billion and an increase of 4.8 percent from 2010.

Arts, Entertainment and Recreation

--The arts, entertainment and recreation sector had revenue of $199.1 billion for 2011, an increase of 3.7 percent from $192.0 billion in 2010.

Other Services (except public administration) 

--Other services (except public administration) revenue for 2011 was $397.5 billion, up from $384.3 billion and an increase of 3.4 percent from 2010.

Percent changes quoted in the release are calculated using estimates rounded to millions as provided in the tables. Also, note that estimates are not adjusted for price changes.

 

As is the case with all surveys, statistics from sample surveys are subject to sampling and nonsampling error. All comparisons made in this release have been tested and found to be statistically significant at the 90 percent confidence level, unless otherwise noted.
