Eco Summit March 9 in Morgantown
The event consists of workshops and presentations from a wide
variety of groups, companies and individuals, as well as field trips
hosted by Coopers Rock Foundation and Friends of Deckers Creek. The
summit will cover topics including local food, mountaintop removal and
fracking.
Speakers include Dr. Michael Hendryx, who researches the health
impacts of coal mining on West Virginia communities; Dustin Steele, a
Mingo County native who works with RAMPS (Radical Action for Mountain
Peoples Survival), a non-violent direct action campaign based in the
southern coalfields of WV; and Jon Berger of The Real Food Challenge,
which works to shift campus food purchasing towards more local,
sustainable, and ethically produced food.
The event is free. Donations to help reimburse speakers' travel
expenses are welcome, and an optional five-dollar donation is
requested of those who wish to attend a field trip. The Monongalia
Group of the Sierra Club is co-sponsoring the event.
The WVU Sierra Student Coalition is a grassroots environmental
organization striving for real improvements in our campus and
community.
