WV May 23, 2013 Weekend First, This Weeks Movies Comings, Goings

It begins with a homecoming, as The Enterprise returns to earth in the wake of a controversial galactic incident, its brash Captain still itching to head back into the stars on a longer mission of peace and exploration. But all is not well on the Blue Planet. A devastating act of terror has exposed an alarming reality: Star Fleet is being attacked from within and the fall-out will leave the entire world in crisis.
Captain Kirk leads the Enterprise on a mission like no other spanning from the Klingon homeworld to the San Francisco Bay. Aboard The Enterprise the enemy among them has a shocking talent for destruction. Kirk will lead them into a shadowy mirror-realm of doubts where they’ve never gone before – navigating the razor-thin lines between friends and enemies, revenge and justice, all-out war and the infinite potential of a united future.
Returning to The Enterprise is the crew that brought it so viscerally to life in Abrams’ “Star Trek”: Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as First Officer Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg as Chief Engineer “Scotty” Scott, Zoe Saldana as Communications Officer Uhura, John Cho as Helmsman Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov and Bruce Greenwood as Admiral Christopher Pike. Joining the cast is Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of the mysterious intergalactic terrorist John Harrison, Alice Eve as ship newcomer Carol Marcus and Peter Weller as the Star Fleet Admiral who comes into conflict with the Enterprise.

CURRENT MINI REVIEWS
IRON MAN 3
Vulnerable superhero Iron Man (played by Robert Downey Jr.), with the team of filmmakers, has brewed a shock and awe adventure. In the third installment of the series, it focuses on maximizing the early Marvel Comic mantra, which continually emphasizes the frailties and humanness of Tony Stark, the alter ego of the man in the power suit. The film also implants empowering references to his intellectual abilities (“You’re a mechanic, make something”.), the powerfulness versus weakness stretches brilliantly and instills multiple “who will survive” moments.
Upon opening, Stark’s physical and emotional limitations have him obsessively laboring on improved power suits, that have prototype snafus in his struggle to recover from nuking aliens and falling back to earth. Meanwhile, his romantic interest Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) is courted by a past face hoping to capitalize on Stark’s indecisive stagnation period.
Shane Black, director/screenwriter, incorporates a series of clever cliffhangers throughout which straps viewers into the front seat of a custom sculpted thrill ride.
An already moody, bombastic Downey wins “likes” despite coping with grandiose arrogance which is often recoiled by curt, snappy retorts fueled by Stark’s good natured laugh at failures, and straight-faced confidence in the midst of malfunctions. A challenging boast upon which he’s ill prepared to deliver, situates the industrialist dragging a broken power suit along dusty Tennessee roads.
An elusive terrorist known as Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) has blasted a commanding upper hand forcing Stark into reliance upon deductive skills and suit-less James Bond acrobatics and bravado in the quest to save the nation and, of course, Pepper facing steadily increasing perils. Look for magical sleight of hands accompanying, over reliance on last minute suit assembly, and the dark fiery steel smelters for sweltering “Iron Man III” into an unmatched smorgasbord of sensational (super) heroic entertainment.
Director/screenwriter Black’s knack for comedic versus exploding visual tightropes rivet audience applause (though not so strong as to be resounding), and the mandatory Marvel mainstay of wait until the scene that’s slipped in following the credit crawl which reveals the Stan Lee “cameo” for those having missed it.
OLYMPUS
You do not want "Olympus Has Fallen" to end. The premise of a small scale terrorist strike sealing the White House avoids the grandiose in exchange for intimacy. After a riveting snowy Camp David tragedy (is this why Naomi Judd jettisoned those running for office rumors... the movie came out?), the secret service and First Family still emotional shake. It's a device that establishes the humanity of the Chief Executive, his son, and a secret service agent.
Jump forward... Amidst the banging of North Korean war drums, a group of diplomats meet in the Oval Office to defuse the tension. What follows, except for the events of 9/11, seem unbelievable. The attack on the towers and Pentagon changed the playing field, so we accept as possible a terrorist plane from the air and a relatively small amount of mercenaries that quickly overwhelm ground guards.
What follows swings to a dash of "Desperate Hours" and "Fair Safe," as the President and cabinet are taken hostage in the bunker and the renegade terrorist has a world wide catastrophe on his agenda.
Suspect this intimate premise that's largely f/x free will have more story telling power than "White House Down" later in the summer. But I haven't seen it yet. "Purge" also on my must list.
OBLIVION
Warping a hideous world's end, the futuristic "Oblivion" strands two emotively flat scientists, Jack (Tom Cruise) and Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) high above a population removed planet known as Earth. Their mission seemingly facilitates vital drone surveillance of the ruins, and noninterruption of transfer of seawater to maintain the "escape to" moon of Saturn.
However, Jack's haunted by a face --- a reoccurring image (Julia played by Olga Kurylenko) "snapped" from a scene on top of the Empire State Building observatory on a sunny day prior to warfare with an alien race known as the Scavs. That is a memory not purged prior to his mission which detains Victoria and he in a cloud house over an mostly structure intact New York City. Or, could it be moments of wistfulness which tempers the mundane daily drone repair tasks.
Bolstered by deserts and flight sequences which recall "Star Wars" imagery, director Joseph (Tron Legacy) Kosinski weaves insertions of mystery, diluted romance, philosophical equations and baffling choices for both characters and viewers. His f/x heavy adaptation has a sluggish start, then, revolves ambiguously unable to determine whether to stress character and narrative driven essence, a blast them gaming canvas, or intentional confusing implications.
Critiquing “Oblivion” without injecting spoilers is a rubric.Suffice that the narrative and editing has shortcomings that cannot be minimized by elusive symbolism and memory lapses. Hints of “2001 A Space Odyssey” greatness emerge then subside . Ultimately, the canvas settles for fill in the blank splotches.
One piece of symbolism resounds: You can “win” a war yet “lose” a planet. Nuclear and biological warfare advocates take heed.
