Boating Serious Recreation, You Must be Careful

“Boating is a recreation but a very serious recreation. It’s like driving a car down the interstate. You have to be very careful," explained Capt. Brett Gaeger of the Huntington Fire Department As warm and hot days (and nights) bring more people to the Ohio River,

"Check your boat out and make sure you have all your safety needs on board.  Don’t drink and drive on the river.  Make sure everyone has the correct life jackets,' he said.

Since the Fire Department has a rescue vehicle, a proper fitting life jacket will keep an overboard victim afloat until help arrives.

One proactive method of getting your boat ship shape involves an interactive U.S. Coast Guard "test." Among items to check out fire extinguishers, ventilation, distress signals, bell, registration and floatation devices.
