Offense Struggles in 5-0 Loss at Radford

Marshall (9-11) put a runner on base in each of the first four innings, including the leadoff man in the first and second, but was never able to bring anyone around to score.

Radford, fueled by starting pitcher Tyler Costello’s eight solid innings, improved to 11-9.

Isaac Ballou (1-for-3 with a walk), Chase Vogelbach (1-for-4), and Aaron Bossi (1-for-3) accounted for the Thundering Herd’s three hits against Costello (3-2).

Marshall’s defense turned four doubles plays but also committed five errors.

Freshman Chase Boster (1-3) went five innings and allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks.He struck out one. 

Costello walked two and struck out two while keeping Marshall scoreless on three hits in eight innings.

Radford did the most damage in the fourth when the Highlanders led the inning off with back-to-back hits and capitalized on one of the Herd’s errors.In the seventh, they added two more, again getting hits from the first two batters of the inning.Matt Hummel pitched the first portion of the seventh and gave up his first run of the season.

Radford second baseman Josh Gardiner went 2-for-4 with a run.Six other Highlanders had hits. 

With Sunday’s game called off due to incoming rain, Marshall and Radford will conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
