HUNTINGTON, WV- The first Marshall Artists Series event took place September 15, 1936, as a one-time celebration to honor the 100th anniversary of Marshall College. Seventy-five years later.. Over the past 75 years, the Marshall Artists Series has existed as a gateway to the world of cultural entertainment in the Tri-State and at Marshall University. This year, the Marshall Artists Series gets back to its roots and celebrates with a season unlike any other. 

“Marshall University’s Marshall Artists Series will celebrate its 75th Anniversary this season by taking our patrons on an artistic and intellectual journey filled with many varied excursions along the way,” explained Penny Watkins, executive director the Marshall Artists Series. .”  We are so very proud of our unique history (the second oldest “town & gown” arts organization in the Country) and are excited about the future.”

Broadway’s Young Frankenstein — Three-time Tony® Award-winner Mel Brooks, along with his record-breaking team from The Producers have brought his smash hit movie, Young Frankenstein, to life as a hilarious Broadway musical.  You’ll have a monstrously good time Thursday, November 10, 2011, at 7:30 PM on the stage of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center with this spectacular new production.  This show packs all your favorite moments from the film with new show-stopping numbers for the stage, including “Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz”. Young Frankenstein is a wickedly inspired re-imagining of the classic Frankenstein legend.  Following the bright, young Dr. Frankenstein as he attempts to create a monster it is only appropriate to assume that there will be complications—hilarious complications. 13 Most Beautiful…Songs For Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests – In the mid-1960s, legendary artist Andy Warhol shot over 500 screen tests in his New York City Studio. His subjects, both famous and anonymous, were filmed by Warhol on black and white 16 mm film, and they exemplify life in the New York City art scene in the 1960’s. Now, in its first commissioned piece, The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, has sifted through the screen tests and chosen the 13 “most beautiful” screen tests and teamed up with indie music darlings, Dean Wareham & Britta Philips who composed the music for 13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. This multi-media event features video projections of the screen tests above the musicians performing live, and has traveled around the globe appearing at such prestigious venues as the world-famous Spoleto Festival.  Now it’s coming to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at 7:30 PM.

Glen Campbell: The Goodbye Tour — The legendary pop & country music singer, guitarist, actor, and TV host,  Glen Campbell wants to say farewell to his legion of fans, and will make a stop in Huntington on his Goodbye Tour on Sunday December 11, 2011, at 3:00 PM in the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.  America’s “Rhinestone Cowboy”, will perform hits from his lengthy catalog including “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Southern Nights,“ and “Gentle on my Mind.” Don’t be surprised if Campbell also performs hits from his upcoming album “Ghost on the Canvas” which features collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Bob Pollard and Jakob Dylan and appearances by Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Brian Setzer, Billy Corgan and many more.  During his 45 years in show business, Glen Campbell has released more than 70 albums, sold 45 million records and 1 Double Platinum album.  Of his 75 trips up the charts, 27 landed him in the Top 10.  Glen Campbell is an artist you won’t want to miss.

Larry King: Standing Up – For 50 years, Larry King was the one asking all the questions. On Thursday, March 1, 2012, at 7:30 PM, Larry King turns the tables on himself at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center in his first stage performance since completing his triumphant 25-year run on the award-winning CNN program “Larry King Live.” This new show, Larry King: Standing Up, features the Emmy®, Peabody and Cable ACE Award-winning broadcast icon as he gives fans a hilarious and insightful peek inside what makes the legend tick.  Starting with his life growing up as a street-smart boy from Brooklyn, to tales about his storied career as the greatest interviewer of all time, Larry King’s style and wit will give audiences a night to remember.  Also, at the end of the night, audience members will receive the rare opportunity to have their very own Q&A session with the star.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Lawrence Wright - The Looming Tower:  Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 Spend an enlightening evening with author, screenwriter, playwright and staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, Lawrence Wright, as he makes his way to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Thursday, September 29, 2011, at 7:30 PM. An acknowledged expert on Al Qaeda, his most recent book, The Looming Tower:  Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, became an international best-seller.  It has been translated into twenty-five languages and garnered many awards including the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction.  Wright is the co-writer of the film, The Siege, starring Denzel Washington, Bruce Willis, and Annette Bening.  In 2006, Wright premiered his one-man play, My Trip to Al-Qaeda, his gripping and highly personal narrative about Al-Qaeda’s rise to power, to a sold out audiences for a 6 weeks in an off-Broadway run.  It is now being made into a documentary film, directed by Academy Award-winning Documentarian Alex Gibney.


Elvis Costello & The Imposters – Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello is known as much for his quirky lyrics full of word plays, as for his unique music, instrumentation and vocal style. On his first trip to WV, Costello makes his way to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Saturday, October 8, 2011, at 7:30 PM. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Elvis Costello is perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and for concert appearances with pianist Steve Nieve. He is also well known for his collaborations with Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, The Brodsky Quartet, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, guitarist Bill Frisell, composer Roy Nathanson, record producer & songwriter T Bone Burnett, and Allen Toussaint. Perhaps his most successful collaboration is Costello’s marriage to jazz singer Diana Krall, with whom he has two sons.  Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.  He was also awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award and has numerous Grammy nominations for his recent albums, “When I Was Cruel” and “The Delivery Man”.

An Evening With Michael McDonald – The five-time Grammy® Award-winner will bring his signature blue-eyed soul to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 7:30 PM. From his early work with Steely Dan, through his years with the Doobie Brothers, and his incredible solo career, McDonald has been internationally recognized for his contributions to the music industry. He ushered in the Doobie Brothers’ most popular era with songs such as “Takin’ it to the Streets”, “What a Fool Believes”, and “Minute by Minute”. Mountain Stage Salutes 75 Years of the Marshall Artists Series – Join Larry Groce, host and artistic director of the iconic WV radio program MOUNTAIN STAGE, as he helps salute the 75-year legacy that is The Marshall Artists Series. This spectacular event will take place at the historic Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at 7:00 PM. Mountain Stage is a two-hour music radio show produced by WV Public Broadcasting and distributed worldwide by National Public Radio (NPR) and the Voice of America’s satellite radio service.  The program showcases diverse music from traditional to modern.  It is recorded before a live audience, typically at the Culture Center Theatre in Charleston, West Virginia. The show is also recorded in other venues throughout the United States and Canada.  Artists appearing in this event will be announced at a later date.

He is perhaps best known for of his nationally syndicated television programs, Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures and most recently Jack Hanna’s: Into the WildInto the Wild in its first season alone won an Emmy® for “Outstanding Children’s Series”. An Evening with Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock packaged with The Fall & Spring International Film Festivals – Don’t miss West Virginia native and award-winning documentary filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock as he kicks off the Marshall Artists Series Fall International Film Festival, Sunday October 16, 2011, at 5:30 PM in the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Spurlock will host a one-time screening of his recent Sundance Film Festival hit – Pom Wonderful Presents the Greatest Movie Ever Sold. The film examines the increased proliferation of branding and product placement in every aspect of our lives, while attempting to persuade big-name brands to sponsor his irreverent exposé. In this eye-opening documentary, viewers follow Spurlock as he convinces a variety of high-profile sponsors to let him pitch their products as "The Greatest," while still maintaining complete control over his creative vision -- an arrangement that's become increasingly rare in the high-stakes entertainment industry. After the screening of Pom Wonderful Presents the Greatest Movie Ever Sold on October 16, audience members will also have the opportunity to participate in a discussion with Spurlock himself.  Kick off the Fall International Film Festival in the best way possible!

The Fall International Film Festival will take place October 17 - 23, 2011, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Featured films include: In A Better World (Denmark), Biutiful (Mexico), Buck (USA), Mother (South Korea), Potiche (France), and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (Sweden).


Spring International Film Festival: February 3-9, 2012

The Spring International Film Festival will take place February 3 – 9, 2012, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Featured films include: Sarah’s Key (France), The Colors of the Mountain (Colombia), Submarine (United Kingdom), Circumstance (Iran), Incendies (Canada), and A Small Act (USA/Kenya).

Grammy Award Winner Cee Lo Green – From his recent stint as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, to having one of the most successful radio hits of the 21st century, “Forget You”, the name Cee Lo Green seems to be on the lips of everyone these days. Here’s your chance to see what everyone is talking about. On Thursday, September 8, 2011, at 7:00 PM, Cee Lo Green will be live on stage at Harris Riverfront Park in Downtown Huntington. Cee Lo co-wrote and sang the biggest song of 2006 with Gnarls Barkley -“Crazy” and he has performed with legendary musicians such as Carlos Santana, written songs for The Black Eyed Peas, as well as helping write and produce The Pussycat Dolls’ song “Don’tcha”. He also produced OutKast’s debut album Southernplayalisticadilacmuzik. So really, who is Cee Lo Green?  He is a performer; he is an entertainer, a Grammy Award-winner. World Music Cabaret – Spend an intimate evening under the stars at your table on the stage of the Keith-Albee as it becomes The Global Stage on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at 7:30 PM as Marshall University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with musicians from Paraguay and Argentina. The evening’s artists include world renowned guitarists, Berta Rojas and Quique Sinesi.  Known for her flawless technique and innate musicality, Berta Rojas ranks among today’s foremost classical guitarists. Her warmth and heart-touching musical artistry delight audiences wherever she performs. A recent visitor to Huntington as a member of Pablo Ziegler’s Trio last year, Quique Sinesi is considered one of the most important guitarists in Argentina for his personal style, using a seven-string Spanish guitar, Piccolo, Acoustic and Charango. His music is based in elements of tango and folklore from his country, incorporating elements of jazz, improvisation, classical and world music. Comedy Central on Campus – A hilarious night of comedy is in store as four of the future stars of Comedy Central come to town Friday, October 14, 2011, at 8:00 PM at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.  This 5th annual Comedy Central college campus tour comes to Marshall University just in time for Homecoming.  Be the first to see the next big names in stand-up comedy. The show will serve up four fresh comedians with delicious new jokes and a side of gut-busting laughter.


OH! What A Piano Can Do -– Spend an intimate evening under the stars at your table on the Keith-Albee stage for Oh! What a Piano Can Do - another Cabaret event – starring Master Pianist, Duke Thompson. There will be two performances on Friday, April 13, 2012, at 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM on the stage of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Duke will entertain and educate as he gives an up close and personal musical display of the power that the Marshall Artists Series’ newly restored Steinway possesses. Duke’s total mastery of the piano, combined with his stage presence, captivates his audience. From Bach to Billy Joel and The Who to the blues, Duke Thompson is unique! He offers a contemporary twist to a genre rooted in legendary pianists such as Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin.
