Marshall Artists Series Announces New Season

HUNTINGTON, WV- Since its inception in 1936, the Marshall Artists Series mission has been to provide cultural exposure through innovative entertainment for Marshall University students, and the Tri-State community. The series has a reputation for providing culturally significant and educationally entertaining acts through thought-provoking programming. The 2013 – 2014 season of the Marshall Artists Series promises to be another trailblazing season. We are taking a musical journey throughout our 77th season,” says Penny Watkins, Executive Director for the Marshall Artists Series. “From centuries old music from France and Austria, to vocal dynamos continuing their family’s musical legacies, from rock-jazz pioneers, to a current chart topper, and to Broadway’s exploration of current and classic hits, we’ve got a wide variety of genres to explore.”

 We invite you to come along on our musical tour this season! Plan to be utterly amazed by the phenomenal Blue Man Group, entertained by Broadway’s latest hits - Million Dollar Quartet and Green Day’s American Idiot; delighted by the timeless tunes sung by the inimitable Natalie Cole, amused by the hilarious celebrity impressions by comedian Kevin Pollak, and inspired to hear pop star Jason Mraz use his music and influence to effect change in our world. The  2013 -2014 Baxter Series will feature:

Natalie Cole —Nine time GRAMMY AWARD Winner Natalie Cole graces the stage of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Daughter of the legendary Nat “King” Cole, Natalie Cole rocketed to stardom in 1975 with her debut album, Inseparable and her #1 single “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)”, which earned her two Grammy Awards.  After a string of singles throughout the 70’s and 80’s, 1991 brought Unforgettable…With Love which included “Unforgettable” her duet with her later father which spent 5 weeks at #1 and earned 6 Grammy Awards.

 

Blood Sweat & Tears Holiday Celebration with 40 Piece Orchestra The three time Grammy Award winning group Blood, Sweat & Tears will share an evening of unforgettable hits and holiday favorites at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 7:30 PM. Backed by a 40-piece orchestra, the band will perform some of their biggest hits including “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” “Spinning Wheel,” “And When I Die,” “God Bless The Child,” and “Got To Get You Into My Life.”

 

Vienna Concert-Verein OrchestraCreated by members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, The 32-piece Vienna Concert-Verein Orchestra, conducted by Phillipe Entremont and featuring piano soloist Sebastian Knauer, will perform a repertoire of Austria’s best – Mozart, Beethoven, Lehar and Strauss, Thursday, January 30, 2014, at 7:30 PM at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.

For the first time in over 48 years, Bizet’s Carmen will be staged at theKeith-Albee Performing Arts Center.Carmen will be presented by Teatro Lirico D’Europa with a full orchestra—on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. There is no other woman in the world of opera like Carmen.  Considered Bizet’s greatest work, his indelible portrait of the willful Gypsy is an operatic tour-de-force, tells the tale of Carmen and her lover Don Jose.  The opera is incredibly dramatic, often times irrational and always brilliant.  Carmen will be performed in French with English supertitles.

 

The sister of the legendary Barbra Streisand, Roslyn Kind, will present An Evening of Cabaret on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center.  Known for her vocal prowess, Kind will present an evening of music, cabaret and family story-telling that is sure to entertain!  Kind is fresh off the European leg of Streisand’s world tour where she and nephew Jason Gould were the special guest artists.  Kind is nine years younger than her mega-famous sibling and has built a considerable name for herself in music, theatre, television, on Broadway and in film.

 

The 2013 – 2014 Mount Series Will Feature:

Singer-Songwriter Jason Mraz will bring his blue-eyed soul sounds to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 18, 2013, at 7:30 PM.  Winner of two Grammy Awards, Mraz scored one of the biggest hits of the decade with “I’m Yours” which made history as the longest running song on Billboard’s Hot 100 – charting for an unprecedented 76 weeks. On the scene for nearly a decade, Mraz has amassed an impressive collection of hits  including -  “The Remedy ( I Won’t Worry),” “You & I Both,” and his latest hit “I Won’t Give Up,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Songs Chart.

 

Prepare to laugh as Kevin Pollak, one of the busiest men in Hollywood, brings An Evening of Comedy to theKeith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 7:30 PM. Pollak is a comedian, impressionist, writer, director, talk show host and a dramatic actor too – appearing in over 60 films including A Few Good Men, The Usual Suspects and Grumpy Old Men to name a few. Pollak first started performing stand-up comedy at age ten and a touring professional stand-up at age twenty. He has starred in three cable TV stand-up comedy specials and Comedy Central recently named Kevin as one of the Top 100 Comedian of all time.

 

Experience the phenomenon as Blue Man Groupmake their debut appearance at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Blue Man Group is known for their intensely exciting and wildly outrageous shows and concerts which combine comedy, heart thumping music and technology to produce a totally unique experience. With no spoken language, Blue Man Group is perfect for people of all ages, languages and cultures.  E! Entertainment News exclaims “Blue Man Group is what every live performance aspires to be.”

 

Direct from Broadway, the Tony winning smash-hit Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet comes to the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 7:30 PM. This is the electrifying true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. This thrilling musical brings you inside the recording studio with four major talents who came together as a red-hot rock ‘n’ roll band for one unforgettable night! The show will feature hits such as “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Ring Of Fire,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk The Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” Hound Dog” and many more.

 

Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award winning multi-platinum album, American Idiot is a groundbreaking  Broadway musical that will rock the stage at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 8 PM. American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends who are forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia, and their quest for true meaning in a post 9/11 world. American Idiot boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before.  The show features Green Day’s powerful soundtrack of hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday,” and the blockbuster title hit “American Idiot.”

 

The 2013-2014 Superticket Will Feature:

Patrons who purchase a Superticket package will receive tickets to all events on both the BAXTER Series & MOUNT Series, along with the Fall & Spring International Film Festival.

 

Fall International Film Festival: November 15-21, 2013

The Fall International Film Festival will take place November 15 - 21, 2013, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Featured films include: The Intouchables (France), Reality (Italy), The Silence (Germany), The Angel’s Share (UK/Scotland/Belgium/Italy), Love Is All You Need  (Denmark), and No (Chile). 

 

Spring International Film Festival:   February 7 -13, 2014

The Spring International Film Festival will take place February 7 – 13, 2014, at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Featured films include: A Royal Affair (Denmark), The Flat (Israel), Like Someone In Love (Japan), War Witch (Canada), Una Noche (Cuba), and The Sessions (USA).

 

2013 – 2014 Special Event:

Rising comedy superstar Bill Burr will have you rolling in the aisles at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Burr is one of the top comedic voices of his generation achieving success in TV and film as well as the live stage.  Selling out theaters internationally, Burr is a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon; his third hour-long comedy special, You People Are All The Same, is available for download through his website and premiered on Netflix in August.  Bill can be seen in the film, The Heat, alongside Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.  Bill has a recurring role on the hit AMC-TV show, Breaking Bad, he was just seen in a guest role on Fox TV’s New Girl and was seen on Kroll Show on Comedy Central.  Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast is one of the most downloaded comedy podcasts on iTunes and his two critically acclaimed hour Comedy Central specials are available on Netflix and DVD.
