The Help
The Help
HUNTINGTON, WV (HNN) – It’s muggy, hot and humid. Cinemas have a/c. That’s the good news. Otherwise, it’s a complex week of flick openings (and closings), due to the Wednesday, Aug. 10 head start for “The Help.”

Opening the comedy midweek gives it a couple days for word of mouth spreading before three additional wide, mainsteamers enter the pool – Final Destination V (3D); 30 Minutes or Less; Glee the 3D Concert Film.

Since theatres make “hold over” and “you’re outta here” decisions based on weekend returns, a quadruple choice of “wide” openings one of which debuts on Wednesday complicates things for decision makers. Word of advice --- the boxoffice choice turnstiles become feverish in August and September. If something opens and doesn’t draw, it’s going to be pulled or relegated to a split schedule quickly. So, if you’ve been holding back waiting to see something that “will be around next week,” the horn is blowing. You might need to make a weekday venture to the cinema or you’ll miss that which you have been procrastinating.

As of 2 a.m. Tuesday, here are tentative schedules for several theatres. The word tentative is emphasized. In several cases, while I entered times to be announced, if you check the theatre’s website on Tuesday late afternoon, you’ll likely find the times posted.

MINI REVIEW: Come back to the theatre those of you wanting a relationship revolving flick without the many clichés often going with the ‘romantic comedy’ genre. “Crazy Stupid Love” explores both the up and downside of falling in love, including a middle schooler head over heels with his non-cougar babysitter. The kid pours his heart out twice---- as he touts the virtues of true love triumphing and as he condemns the notion that a soulmate exists. Who needs love, right? Can’t blame the type, his mom and dad have split and they’re each trying to rapidly jump into the dating pool from the highest diving board on the deepest side of the pool. Best line: You’re still the same; you’ve just got new clothes.

MAINSTREAM: The Help; Glee the 3D Concert Movie; 30 Minutes or Less; Final Destination V 3D;

LIMITED: Moonlight in Paris (Discount Cinema)

PREMIERE:  Starts Aug 19, The Doughboys (made in WV), Marquee Pullman Square, Highlands, Southridge, Galleria;

Doughboy," a family-friendly film that pays tribute to America's men and women in service, opens Friday, Aug. 19, at Marquee Cinemas in Wheeling (Triadelphia), Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley.  The film shot exclusively on location in Wheeling earlier this year and is directed by J.W. Myers and written by Ty DeMartino. It explores the issues of freedom and patriotism and how they are perceived by today's young people. Flyover Films and Route 40 Films produced "Doughboy" and was executive produced by Wheeling's Kristin Seibert. It stars newcomers Barrett Carnahan, Emily Capehart and Michael Allen and features veteran film and TV actor Terry Kiser ("Weekend at Bernie's"). Friends with Benefits
Friends with Benefits

Friends with Benefits: Headhunter (Mila Kunis) persuades recruit (Justin Timberlake) to forsake his job in San Francisco and move to the Big Apple. Both have been avoiding relationships and they both realize their chemistry is bubbling. Instead of hooking up, they decide to be best friends with nighttime benefits. Will no strings attached solve their sexual and personal issues?

Horrible Bosses: Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day have bosses from Hades. They decide the only way to happiness is to waste their superior. Their murderous plan soon snowballs into chaos. Directed by Seth (“Four Christmases”) Gordon, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston (as a foul mouthed dentist) have supporting roles. IMDB suggests a dude’s version of “Nine to Five.” Boxoffice Magazine believes this could be “one of the summer’s biggest sleepers” due to the excellent cast and high concept premise.

Zookeeper: Griffin (Kevin James) is more comfortable with the king of beasts than a member of the opposite sex. And the feeling is mutual, women leave him due to his unglamorous job which bodes no future nestegg. When he decides to quit, his animals start talking to teach him about courtship. James has a solid track record for family comedy, having toplined “Paul Blart” and “Grown Ups.”

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows (Part 2 in 3D): A decade after it began, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) go back to Hogwarts for the fight to the death duel between Harry and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). David (“Order of the Phoenix,” “Half Blood Prince” “Part One Deathly Hallows”) Yates has a challenge faced by few directors --- Bringing a mega-tentpole franchise to a noteworthy close. Or, will J.K. Rowling give in and pen another Potter novel?

Captain America

Captain America the First Avenger: One of the first characters upon which Marvel built its universe, Chris Evans stars as a meek World War II soldier who gains powers beyond most mortals after consuming an experimental serum. Hugo Weaving plays the Captain’s nemeses, the dreaded Red Skull.
