New films again dominate the Friday openings, as the expansion of limited Oscar and Golden Globe winners fade from screens. Family friendly "Lego Movie" will be challenging long legged Elsa and Anna in the animated derby.  "The Nut Job" will also take on the animated champion. Can "Elsa" again cast a weather spell and push the new Disney classic higher into the all-time record books? It's down to sing-a-long and 2D in most venues, but still letting go for at least matinees. Be forewarned... the Snow Queen has threatened to out weather-cast the ground hog. Her sister wants to convince her to allow an early Spring; Elsa wants an Oscar for best animated film in her hands before turning off the snow making mechanisms... Who will convince her?

George Clooney and Matt Damon topline "Momuments Men" while Danila Kozlovsky and  Zoey Deutch attend the "Vampire Academy."  Limited runs continue of  "12 Years a Slave," "Gimme Shelter"  "Nebraska" and  "August Osage County."  continue, as does best picture nominees "American Hustle," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and in some cinemas "Saving Mr. Banks" and "Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

"Ride Along" has held off challengers for three weeks. It won't be on top for #4.

Hoping for an edge "Robocop" opens Wed. Feb. 12 ahead of Valentine's Day. Anticipate schedule alterations for Tuesday night premieres and same on Thursday, Feb. 13 for evening premieres of "Endless Love," "About Last Night," and "Winter's Tale." Check cinema schedules for last minute showing alterations.

The new release schedule continues heating  up too BEFORE Oscar night, so, it's a toss-up how many nominees will still be on screen when they hand out the statuettes, except "Frozen" Disney wants a billion dollar worldwide gross for its new animation icon. Elsa has won one decision... the DVD has been pushed back until mid-March. That allows more "see it again" and sing-a-longs in cinemas.

MINI REVIEW: Labor Day

"Labor Day" unites an escaped prisoner (Josh Brolin) with an isolated, heartbroken single mom (Kate Winslet) for a warm romance that portrays both as victims of circumstance. Not a weeper, the convict proves he's still got a heart beating in his chest which reawakens the woman's hope.  Their pasts are  told through somewhat effective quick flashbacks which on his part need some verbal expounding. Watch for the teen and his budding "girl friend" to muck up the deepening relationship. Careful, this feel good excursion has --- how do I do this without a spoiler --- a need to revisit realistic short and long term consequences.

With mom experiencing masculine gentleness for the first time since her divorce, 13-year old son (Gattlin Griffith) awkwardly contends with losing his "man around the house" status, a role that feels pretty "dad-like" until Chicago transplant (Brooke Smith) warns him about adult romance.

Set in a yawning small town over a holiday weekend, the couple's bliss is broken by "routine" events, which compromise the fugitive's safety. Eventually, it's certain that "Bonnie and Clyde" will not re-occur. Director / writer Jason Reitman could have injected less giveaways, though, which gradually tip the scales of justice and remove potential suspense.

Winselt and Brolin elevate passion from simplicity. They must rely on minimal external environment assistance as they are stuck inside a moderately run-down farmhouse for the duration.

MINI REVIEW: Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit

Tom Clancy’s trademark has been intricate, well executed novels dealing with the military and terrorism. His  “Patriot Games”  and  “Clear and Present Danger” (1990-1994) starred action and suspense juggernaut Harrison Ford as a CIA Analyst drawn into activity not authorized by Congress.  The series kicked off with Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan (“Hunt for Red October”)  and  had a brief re-start in 2002 (“Sum of All Fears”) with Ben Affleck in the title role.

These techno-thrillers blend the intricacies of a stripped down “Mission Impossible” with blasts and bullets aplenty.  Most sacrifice character development. Instead , the complex international politics that pulls Ryan into the save the world caper.

“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”  transplants  the re-booted “Star Trek’s” Captain Kirk i.e. Chris Pine into the body of the a young 9/11 motivated Marine who possesses a strong sense of analysis which leads to his recruitment as a “sleeper” CIA operative plucked into the “wolf” Wall Street world.  He will be activated when a Russian rogue intends to crash the market by pulling billions and sending the U.S.A. into third-world status amidst the dollar’s hyper inflation.

Since this flick essentially dwells on the “origin” of Ryan’s involvement with cataclysmic world politics, the production has many minutes of lethargy.  Director Kenneth Branagh  known for  “Thor,” “Iron Man II” and “Sleuth” on the surface appears a good choice, but Branagh negates the thrust of turning technological threats into visual suspense. Remember, “War Games,” anyone?

Men and women breathlessly programmed computers and watched the screens as they attempted to “beat” the operating system at the world war “game.”  After a period of lightning pass-off timed choreography, computer manipulations and precise against the clock timing come in a string of dialogue  on the jet leaving Russian airspace, not, a horde of cyber  workers racing to find the malware accounts.

That said, “Shadow Recruit” scores  a non-descript mixed bag. And, the bag would leak more if not for the final third action.

Prior to actual thwart the bomb final act, Chris Pine’s main struggle has been convincing his lovely physical therapist  (Keira  Knightey)  to accompany him on a date.  Naturally this leads to a committed relationship which becomes complicated due to a torn movie ticket that send the suspicious significant other right to his Russian hotel room and in harm’s way.

Bestow Branagh credit for enlivening the “is he having an affair” portion.  Knightey and Pine have a nearly hilarious “everything is OK” transcontinental phone call , when Pine is scurrying dark Russian streets following an attempt on his life.

Hopefully, when Pine returns as Ryan (it’s a reboot given), the intellectual inspired  international crisis coupled with hand to hand combat will undertake more believable circumstances, rather than this script which appears to have been built by rolling dice after the last written scene.
