HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Thundering Herd Men’s soccer team opened its exhibition season with a 1-0 loss to the Bowling Green Falcons at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The lone goal scorer for the Falcons, Danny Baraldi, slotted home a goal past Dominik Reining from 6 yards in the 63rd minute.

Instead of the standard 45 minute halves, both teams elected to play three 30 minute periods.

Even though the Herd lost the contest, it still had plenty of opportunities to get on the scoreboard. The team finished with 9 shots overall and 3 shots on goal. Two off those shots on goal came from Junior Jack Hopkins, while Scott Doney produced the other attempt on goal.

23 overall players participated for the Herd, as Head Coach Bob Gray and his staff look to assess many of the 12 newcomers on the squad this season. Newcomers to the team included Dominik Reining, Ivan Sekulic, Christian Kershaw, Ryan Forde, Austin Klueh, Scott Doney, Cory Shimensky, Mike Abraham, Brandon Taylor, James Mingoes and Goran Bratic. The Falcons played 16 players overall.

Quotes by Coach Bob Gray on testing new players:

“We did a lot today and that’s why we played the 3 periods. Saturday’s game will be more of the real deal. We will play two 45 minute halves and the starters and our top 14 will go a lot more next game. We found some things out about our team today and we will have to make some adjustments personnel wise. Today was kind of a welcome to college soccer.”

Junior Midfielder Jack Hopkins (Birmingham, Ala.) was selected to the College Sports Madness Preseason Conference USA Second Team. Hopkins is the returning leader in both goals (3) and points (6) from last season.

The Herd will take on Radford in its final exhibition on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Hoops Family Field. A preview of Saturday’s game can be found here.
