HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –  The Thundering Herd men’s soccer team fought hard for 110 minutes, but could only find a tie in its regular season opener at Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. After the two extra time periods, the score finished up 0-0 against the Duquesne Dukes.

AGAINST THE DUKES

Both teams had noticeable chances to score in the game, but could not find the back of the net. In the 16th minute, Duquese’s midfielder Jason Trum had a shot deflect off the crossbar. The rebound came to Thomas Devillardi, but his shot was saved by Marshall goalkeeper Bijan Gloston (Clarksville, Tenn).

In the first period of extra-time, a combination play between Marshall players Daniel Jodah (Mississauga, Ontario), Goran Bratic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Ivan Sekulic (Zagreb, Croatia) was saved by Duquesne goalkeeper Sam Frymier.

In the second overtime period, Marshall freshman goalkeeper Dominik Reining (Frankfurt, Germany) made a huge stop, tipping a shot from Twum over his crossbar, preserving the tie.

Both teams produced plenty of shots; Duquesne finished with 21, while the Herd produced 16.

THE GRAY AREA

Quotes by Coach Bob Gray<http://www.herdzone.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/bob_gray_218589.html> on the Duquesne game:
“It was a good exciting match. They were a good side. They fought hard and they were a handful up top and clean in the back. We showed our youth tonight. We have a fair amount of underclassmen in there and gave the ball away and we were a little too direct.’

NEXT TIME OUT

The Herd will complete its two game home stand on Sunday, Aug. 31 in a game at Hoops Family Field against Cleveland State at 1 p.m.
