RICHMOND, Ky. – Three goals in a 10-minute span during the second half lifted Marshall women’s soccer (3-2-2) over Eastern Kentucky (2-5-0) for a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field in Richmond, Ky.

Rebounding from a 1-0 halftime deficit thanks to a 16th-minute goal by the Colonels’ Cassie Smith, junior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) took a deflection off a save in the 62nd minute and struck into the upper right of the goal to equalize the match. It was her third score of the season, as well as her third goal in three consecutive matches.

Four minutes later, it was senior Myka DeMarco’s (Dallas) turn when she headed a ball from close range off a corner kick by Lia Foster (Keswick, Ontario) for the 2-1, go-ahead goal. Kristine Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) also helped on the play for her first career assist. She followed six minutes later with a header goal of her own off Foster’s free kick from the left side to make it 3-1 in the Herd’s favor. Foster’s two assists are a first since Angela Desumma against Morehead State on Sept. 11, 2011.

The Herd’s back line held on for the remaining 19 minutes and Marshall came away with a 3-1 victory.

Marshall led in shots (19-6), shots on-goal (13-4) and corner kicks (4-3). Redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) made three saves for the Herd while the Colonel’s Anna Hall saved 10.

Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On differences from the first to second half:
“I was proud of the way the team came back from the first half deficit. I thought we had a lackluster performance in the first. It was less than what was expected. But in the second half they came out with a different attitude. They played to win the game, which was a definite change in gear and tempo from the first half. For a Sunday game on the road after a hard-fought Friday game, it felt good to get this win.”

On junior Lia Foster’s two assists:
“For us to be able to score off the set piece is crucial and we’re usually good at corners. We’ve been working on our consistency. Lia stepped up to the task today and gave us some great services. She came to us as an attacker, but for her to create opportunities like these for us is fantastic.”

Junior Erin Simmons’ (Gahanna, Ohio) goals against Appalachian State (Sept. 7), Cincinnati (Sept. 12) and Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 14) mark the first time a member of the Herd has scored in three or more consecutive matches since Chelsey Maiden in 2012. With 13 career goals, Simmons holds eighth place in the Herd record book. Additionally, her five game-winning goals, 111 shots and 31 points rank Nos. 4, 6 and 8 all-time, respectively.
