Artisian Project to Benefit Hoops Family Children's Hospital
An exciting project that will bring new visitors to Huntington next spring is already gearing up.

The City of Huntington, the Hoops Family Children’s Hospital and the Cabell Huntington Hospital Auxiliary are launching a collaborative art ...initiative called “All Aboard! The Artisans Express 2015.” In keeping with Chicago’s Parade of Cows and Lexington’s Horse Mania, artists from throughout the Tri-State will apply their creativity to 42 fiberglass train engine models that will be displayed throughout the city next year. Afterward, the trains will be sold in an auction to benefit the children’s hospital.

The first step, the “All Aboard! The Artisans Express” unveiling event, will take place in the Harless Auditorium on the campus of Cabell Huntington Hospital on October 1 at 5 p.m. During this event, artists from the Tri-State and communities in neighboring states and beyond will get their first look at the 42 train models that they can transform into pieces of artwork to be displayed in locations throughout Huntington.

Chosen artists will be notified in January 2015 if their design was selected for this inaugural season.

Organizers of the Artisans Express believe it has the potential to bring national attention to the Tri-State arts community, while also portraying a positive image of the region and benefiting the children’s health services at the Hoops Family Children’s Hospital.

The Cabell Huntington Hospital Auxiliary provided the initial money needed to purchase the train sculptures and the City of Huntington and Mayor Steve Williams have been involved with securing locations for the art installation that will be in place from May to November 2015. Local businesses will sponsor the trains that will then be auctioned at the June 13, 2015 charity event.

“We have long stated that the presence of public art would enhance the appearance of downtown Huntington as an art destination,” Mayor Williams said. “The addition of the All Aboard art exhibit will transform the downtown into a walking art gallery.”

Additional information about the Artisans Express will be available throughout the process with updates provided via social media at @ArtisansExpress on Twitter and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/tristateartisansexpress.
