Muncie, Ind. – The Thundering Herd ran out of gas Friday night, losing a 2-0 match to the Ball State Cardinals by allowing two goals in the final five minutes of the 90-minute game. The road loss gives Marshall its first defeat in its last three competitions and drops MU to 2-5-1 record for the season.

The first half showcased a strong defensive effort from both squads, as the two teams remained at a 0-0 tie following the opening period. The match continued to stay scoreless throughout the second period until the 85th minute when Alyssa Ables striped a 20-yard shot past Herd goalie, Betsy Haugh (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle HS) for the Cardinals first goal. One minute later Ball State connected again when Becca Sutton scored her third goal of the season, taking advantage of a rebounded shot.

Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East HS) fired five shots for Marshall, including one on goal. DeSumma was also assisted by Alyssa Cathey (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain HS), who came off the bench to help the Herd attach with three shots, two being on goal. Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky./Russell HS) and Chelsey Maiden (Vienna, W.Va./Parkersburg HS) each recorded two shots.

Before the 85th minute goal Marshall goalie Betsy Haugh and the Herd defense saved nine shots.

Marshall posted 12 shots on the afternoon, targeting four on goal, and managed three corner kicks.

The Herd look to get back in the win column as they begin conference play next week, traveling to El Paso, Texas and Colorado Springs, Colorado to take on the University of Texas, El Paso and Colorado College.
