Huntington, WV – Marshall University women’s soccer opens up Conference USA play this weekend on the road facing foes University of Texas at El Paso and Colorado College. The Herd will take on the Miners Friday night at 9 P.M. and the Tigers Sunday at 2 P.M. MU, now at 2-5-1, faces a dangerous UTEP team who has posted a 5-0 record at home throughout the 2011 season. Colorado College currently holds a 2-4-2 record.

In 2010 The Herd defeated both UTEP and Colorado College for the first time in team history. Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East HS) tallied a goal and assist in each of the matchups last season against UTEP and Colorado College. DeSumma is second among all C-USA players in shots with 31 total attacks and tied for sixth in points with nine.

Marshall looks to build a win streak against each of the two opponents, while beginning a much needed win streak for the 2011 season. The Herd are coming off of 2-0 defeat against Ball State and are eager for a win.

Coach
Kevin Long knows that each game is important, but a brand new season begins tomorrow. Long states, “Now is the time to test whether we have been learning and applying the lessons gained throughout the non-conference matchups. Although our record does not show wins, we have grasped items that need to be improved and we are still of the belief that we can accomplish great things this season.”

Long continues, “This weekend will display the strength of our conference and our squad is eager to compete for a win. Thus far we have called upon young players to step into huge roles as we have battled through injuries to open the first eight games, and we’ll be anxious to see how maturity sets in for the remainder of the year.”
