HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marshall women’s soccer’s sibling combination of Kristine Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) lifted the Thundering Herd (7-5-4, 4-2-2) over Southern Miss (5-9-3, 0-5-3), 3-1 on Friday evening at Southern Miss Soccer Complex.

With the win, Marshall gained its 14th point in the Conference USA standings while Southern Miss remains winless in the league.

Kristine put Marshall on the board in the 26th minute when she took a pass from her younger sister and fired a shot that hit the crossbar. The ball bounced off the Eagles’ goalkeeper and found its way into the net for Kristine’s seventh goal of the season. Kelly was quick to follow in her older sister’s footsteps and stole the ball in the 33rd minute just outside the box and bounced a slow roller into the right back corner of the Southern Miss net to extend Marshall’s lead to 2-0. The Herd fended off multiple attacks by the Golden Eagles in the final minutes of the half kept them off the scoreboard at the break. Marshall led shots (15-5) and shots on goal (7-1) at halftime.

Kelly Culicerto struck again in the 56th minute, notching her third multi-goal match this season and bringing the Herd’s lead to 3-0. This time, she headed the ball off a Jenna Dubs (Green Lane, Pa.) corner kick.

In the 64th minute, Becky McMullan put the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard when she collected a ball from Adriana Garcia and put it in the upper-third of the Herd goal. Marshall’s back line stayed strong for the remainder of the match and the Herd came away with the 3-1 victory.

Marshall led in shots (19-13), shots-on-goal (9-6) and corner kicks (3-2). Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) made five saves for the Herd, while Shelby Presnell made six for Southern Miss.
