Marshall Men's Soccer Qualifies for C-USA Tournament

Special to HNN Provided by Herd Zone
After its 2-1 win over No. 15 New Mexico, Marshall's men's soccer team did all it could in its final Conference USA match of the season to qualify for the Conference USA tournament in Norfolk, Va., Nov. 12-16.

On Sunday, the Thundering Herd clinched a spot when rival Kentucky defeated FIU 1-0 in Miami. Teams receive three points for a win in Conference USA standings, while a tie earns each team one point and a loss earns zero. The Herd finished with 10 points (3-4-1 C-USA), meaning that FIU, at six points, could not make up the necessary ground after losing to Kentucky with just one game remaining, Nov. 7 at Old Dominion.

With seven teams making it to the tournament, Marshall currently sits in fifth place, although the three teams still eligible for the final two spots still have one game remaining. Updated Conference USA standings can be found here<>.

Marshall won its final Conference USA match of the season against No. 15 New Mexico on Saturday, with goals from sophomores Daniel Jodah (Mississauga, Ontario) and Trevor Starcher (Hurricane, W.Va.) The Lobos advanced to the Final Four last season, before losing to champions Notre Dame.

Herd coach Bob Gray said he is pleased with making it to the tournament for the first time since 2011, especially given the way the team qualified.

"Our goal all along was to try and get into the tournament and we had to do it in one of the most difficult ways we could possibly do it by having to beat No. 15 New Mexico," Gray said. "Not many teams go into Albuquerque and win."

Gray also said the team is starting to believe in its abilities and is ready for the challenges a tournament atmosphere will bring.

"We are optimistic now," Gray said. "We played three of the best teams in the Conference tough now. We've said all along that anyone can get in and we want to make some noise. We haven't been in two years, so we are excited to get there."
