| By Brenda Box, HNN | |||||||||||||
While the traditional twentieth anniversary gift is china, and the modern gift is platinum, the students at Spring Hill Elementary School were willing to settle for cake and cookies. The school celebrated 20 years of education by hosting a reunion for all former and current students and staff on Tuesday, February 13. From 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, tours of the school were offered. Then, at 7:00 PM, the ceremonies and recognitions will took place. Spring Hill
Elementary has been making history since it opened its doors on January 6, 1981. The largest and newest elementary school in Cabell
County, Spring Hill was formed by the consolidation of Ensign, Lincoln, and Simms
Elementary schools. The district also
included the closed Oley Elementary School. Spring Hill Elementary is also Cabell Countys only extended year school. The students can opt for the regular school year or year-around school. Of the 555 students at Spring Hill, 262 are on the regular calendar, and 293 are on the modified, or extended calendar. Students on the modified schedule begin school in July, then attend school for 9 week intervals, broken up by three 3 week breaks. Spring Hill principal Dortha Williamson recently told the Cabell County School Board that there are, in effect, two schools located in the Spring Hill building. She also testified that the extended school is doing very well. |
