NAREE Names Best Real Estate Books of the Year in the Prestigious Robert Bruss Book Competition

The National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) has named the 2008 winners of the Robert Bruss Real Estate Book Awards, recognizing excellence in recently published works.
Winning the first place Gold Award in the competition is: “Prefabulous: The House of Your Dreams Delivered Fresh from the Factory” written by Sheri Koones and published by Taunton Press. The judges commented: "This is an impressive book. Written in easy to read language, with wonderful four-color photographs that illustrate what is discussed in the text, it explores in depth the different types of prefab homes available on the market. The amount of information is stunning, making this book a necessity for anyone who is considering building this type of house.”
Winning the Silver Award is: "Creating Value - Smart Development and Green Design" written by Vernon Swaback and published by the Urban Land Institute. The judges commented: "With interest in a 'green' environment rapidly receiving more and more attention, this book by a well-known architect is must reading for anyone interested in real estate development. Thoroughly researched and making good use of four-color photographs and illustrations that allow the reader to see the points that the author is making, it breaks new ground in our understanding of creating value by design."
Winning the Bronze Award is: “Hines: A Legacy of Quality in the Built Environment” edited by George Lancaster and published by Fenwick Publishing. This book includes 12 essays by industry notables David Childs, Lisa Gray, Ann Holmes, Hilary Lewis, Joe Mashburn, William McDonough, William Middleton, Ron Nyren, William Poorvu, Laura Rowley, Mark Seal and Robert A. M. Stern. The judges commented: "This book about Gerald D. Hines and his real estate company stands out because it is written by twelve experienced essayists who have an expertise in architecture and/or business. Thus, they are able to bring a historical insight to their subject that helps readers appreciate Hines' significance.”
The NAREE First-Time Author Award winners are Carmen Multhauf and Lloyd G. Multhauf, authors of "Generational Housing: Myth or Mastery". Their book was published by TABS -- Training And Broker Services. The judges commented: "By examining and analyzing the different generations in the housing market, the authors show understanding home buyers is far more complicated than it appears at first.”
The judges were: Michael Frolove, Instructor at the Real Estate Institute, Temple University, and a licensed real estate broker and appraiser in New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Allen Norwood, retired Homes Editor, Charlotte Observer and a freelance editor of HGTV online and a former member of NAREE who also had served as the association’s Vice President; and Professor Pat Washburn, Journalism Professor, E. W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University.
NAREE’s book awards program was created this year to recognize excellence by real estate authors. It is named for the late Robert Bruss, syndicated real estate columnist, prolific writer and a longtime NAREE leader. Bruss, who died in 2007, frequently wrote reviews of realty books. Books focused on home buying, selling, leasing, renting, mortgage finance, green building, urban design, investing, architecture, construction and other related topics were considered.
NAREE is a non-profit association of writers celebrating 80 years of service, founded in 1929. The awards were presented at NAREE’s Officer Installation & Awards Dinner in Orlando.
For 58 years, NAREE also has organized a journalism competition for news and feature articles about real estate. The deadline to enter the journalism competition is Feb. 20th. The journalism awards will be given at NAREE’s annual Real Estate Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C. in June 2009.
