Greyhound’s Role in American History
Since its start in 1914, Greyhound Lines, Inc. has become an American icon and the largest provider of intercity bus transportation, serving more than 3,700 destinations across North America. The company has played a role in some of North America’s defining moments in history, such as its selection as the official transportation carrier at the 1933 Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago and the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City.
During the Second World War Greyhound was a major carrier of troops heading to the East and West coasts. At the same time, Greyhound started to train women to drive buses when more than 40 percent of the U.S. workforce was called to military service. And, in 1961, Greyhound carried a group of civil rights leaders known as the "Freedom Riders" into the Deep South to protest state-sponsored segregation in interstate transportation facilities. Later that year, the Interstate Commerce Commission outlawed segregation in all interstate transportation facilities.
A Brand Reborn
Throughout the company’s history, Greyhound has proactively made improvements to their buses and terminals that kept them ahead of the industry. Beginning in 2004, the company invested more than $60 million into upgrading its terminals and operations. The three-year project involved upgrading 125 facilities with new signage, fresh paint, renovated restroom facilities and plasma screen televisions as well as newly designed uniforms for its drivers and employees. Greyhound also instituted a rigorous new training program that improves customer service at every point of contact.
Most recently -- in April 2009 -- Greyhound unveiled its fleet of new buses, with a fresh look inspired by the company’s rich design history. The new buses feature a sleek exterior of strong blue and premium silver colors, highlighting a new Greyhound logo. Additionally the motorcoaches were designed to offer a more comfortable riding experience and are equipped with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, extra legroom and three-point seatbelts.
While Greyhound is well known for its regularly scheduled passenger service, the company also provides a number of other services for its customers. Greyhound PackageXpress service offers value-priced same-day and early-next-day package delivery to thousands of destinations. And the company's Greyhound Travel Services unit offers charter packages for businesses, conventions, schools and other groups at competitive rates.
Greyhound has three operating subsidiaries in the United States, which are a part of the nationwide Greyhound network. They include: Valley Transit Company, serving the Texas-Mexico border, Crucero USA, serving southern California and Arizona into Mexico, and Americanos USA, serving points in Mexico from Texas and New Mexico.
In addition, Greyhound has interline partnerships with a number of independent bus lines across the United States. These bus companies provide complementary service to Greyhound Lines' existing schedules and link to many of the smaller towns in Greyhound Lines' national route system.
Amtrak passengers use Greyhound to make connections to cities not served by rail on Amtrak Thruway service, by purchasing a ticket for the bus connection from Amtrak in conjunction with the purchase of their rail ticket. If passengers desire, they may also buy a bus ticket directly from Greyhound.
For travel within Canada, Greyhound Canada carries millions of passengers across the country's provinces and territories each year. The company also provides Greyhound Courier Express package delivery service to its various Canadian locations.
For those within Mexico who wish to travel by Greyhound in the United States, Greyhound subsidiary Greyhound de Mexico can sell Greyhound tickets at one of more than 100 agencies located throughout Mexico. The agencies also sell tickets for several Mexican bus companies, like Estrella Blanca, which connect to Greyhound service at the United States-Mexico border cities.
