Giant Bottle of 'Bloody Syrup' to Be Smashed Outside Pennsylvania Capitol
PETA Urges Consumers to Boycott Canadian Maple Syrup in Hopes of Stopping Annual Seal Slaughter

Harrisburg, PA (BNN) -- Outside the state Capitol in Harrisburg on Thursday, July 9, 2009, a PETA member will whack a 6-foot bottle of gooey "maple syrup" with a hakapik (the weapon that sealers use to kill baby seals), releasing the bottle's blood-red contents. Other PETA members, including one in a seal costume, will hold signs that read, "Buy American: Boycott Canadian Maple Syrup."

When: Thursday, July 9, 12 noon

Where: Pennsylvania Capitol, Third Street (between Walnut and North streets), Harrisburg

PETA is calling on consumers to boycott Canadian maple syrup in order to pressure the government to stop the annual seal slaughter, during which baby seals have their heads bashed in or are shot, often in front of their wailing mothers.

This year, three-fourths of the nearly 300,000 harp seals expected to be killed were spared, in part because the price of seal fur has plummeted as the international outrage against the seal slaughter rises. The European Union and the U.S. have banned seal products, and world leaders -- including bear-hunter Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin -- have spoken out against the massacre.

"Canada has ignored calls from around the world to stop the seal slaughter, but we're hoping that a plunge in maple syrup sales might get the government's attention," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "We want consumers to buy American maple syrup only because there's nothing 'sweet' about a country that condones the largest annual massacre of marine mammals on the planet."

PETA has held similar demonstrations in other leading maple syrup-producing states (Maine, Vermont, and New York) and is now taking the protest to cities around the country.

Animal rights advocates from Mercer County plan to protest the seal slaughter early this fall and promote West Virginia Maple Syrup at the same time.

The West Virginia Maple Syrup Festival is a packed weekend in Pickens, West Virginia the second week of March.
