Charleston, WV (HNN) -- In September, I challenged the residents of the Kenneth Honey Rubenstein Juvenile Center in Davis, W.Va., to a basketball game and they accepted. On Friday, Nov. 20, members of my administration will travel to Tucker County to participate in this charity game, and Gayle and I invite you to join us for this fun-filled community event.

The cost of admission for each person is a toy that will be donated to the “State Troopers for West Virginia Needy” campaign, and will benefit local children in Tucker County. Cash donations will also be accepted and will go to the Parsons Community Action Center for the purchase of gifts and necessities for area families in need.

Appetizers will be offered to the public and there will be an opportunity to mingle with attendees from 5 p.m. until the game tips off at 6 p.m.

Seating is limited; therefore, those planning to attend must reserve a seat. To make your reservations or obtain more information please contact Terra Hamrick at 304-259-5241.

This should be a great event, so please don’t miss out.

Events like this, give us the opportunity to encourage our youth and help them discover the importance of teamwork and volunteerism. Sports are a great way for children and young adults to get involved and learn life-long lessons about dedication, determination, goal-setting and discipline.

There is a saying, “A good example has twice the value of good advice.” I believe that this statement is very true. We are participating in this game to show these kids that they can make a positive impact on society. This charity basketball game will show the young residents that they can do well, make a positive difference and help their neighbor – all while having some fun.

I often speak about the five promises that we should keep to every child and at the heart of those promises is the idea that children should have the opportunity to give something back to their communities. And, this charity basketball game and collecting items for those less fortunate are wonderful lessons for these young residents to learn and value.

So please join Gayle and me for this important community event. You can make a positive difference too.
