DEVOTION: Garbage

By Beth Bondurant

When I hear the roar of the garbage truck getting rid of the multiple bags waiting at the edge of my driveway... great relief floods over my mind, body, soul and spirit.

Those who drive the garbage truck and the runners who so quickly discard my waste receive my heartiest appreciation and thanksgiving.

For years we lived in rural country without any garbage service and had total responsibility for finding somewhere to dispose of our endless pile of cans, bottles and other items that would not burn.

Garbage can become a burden when it gathers and grows...becoming stale and oppressive.

"God removes our sins as far as the east is from the west."

Likewise, each and everyday we are inundated with the refuse of life. It comes from nature... and all inhabitants who dwell in the beauty of God's creation. My lifestyle can be rubbish for another and even the words of my mouth can become an offensive swill to others.

Anyone who has ever seen a heaping landfill can picture the unbelievable amount of unsuitable trash that constantly builds up from one individual and is greatly compounded by an entire community.

"My grace is sufficient."

We are promised by God's unconditional love and mercy that the "very things we would not do" are forgiven and we are "made new every morning".

A good meditation might be to envision our stuffing into a large size garbage bag all the dirt from our mind, body, soul and spirit... and God's hands of love ... picking up the sack... and carrying it away forever.

What a relief!! Our burdens are lifted and we are empowered with a clean heart.

Listen for the heavy wheels of redemption that roll in unwavering options to bring us hope, healing, grace and love. You, too, may whisper .. Thank God for the garbage guardian that "renews a right spirit within me".
