WEEKEND FIRST FROM HNN: Weekly Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford
Huntington News Network Critic

Will moviegoers suddenly become page turners this weekend at one minute after midnight? The scene switches to Empire Books and News and Borders for party festivities on the final Harry Potter book, “Deathly Hallows.”

But Hollywood will not be taking a “break,” although the week does not bring another “event” sequel to the silver screens. Instead, the cult John Waters flick, turned hit Broadway musical, now becomes a musical adaptation remake with John Travolta in drag! Tracy Tumbland (Nicky Blonsky), a big girl with big hair and a bigger heart, has a passion to dance on Baltimore’s after school televised dance party. But can she overcome the prejudices of her plus sized figure to earn a spot on the show?

Incidentally, when John Waters made this hair-do and hair-don’t flick in 1988, Ricky Lake played the Tracy part. Also featured were Sonny Bono, Divine, Jerry Stiller, and Pia Zadora.

While “Hairspray” gender bender seems incidental, the week also puts Adam Sandler and Kevin James as a would-be ‘gay’ couple attempting to qualify for domestic partner fire fighter benefits in “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.” Red tape prevents Larry (James) from naming his two kids on a life insurance policy, so he calls in a favor owed by Chuck (Sandler) for saving his life. Suddenly, the pride of the fire house have become, well, domestic partners.

Also opening in Ashland (Cinema 10) and Charleston (Park Place Stadium), the provocative Michael Moore “documentary,” “Sicko.” Having taken on Detroit’s automakers and the Bush Administration in “Fahrenheit 9/11,” Moore exposes the woes of the American health care industry, shedding light on complicated medical affairs of individuals and communities.

HOLD OVERS:

1408 - Have you recovered from “Hostel II?” If so, you can join John Cusack as he checks into the mysterious hotel room “1408” which has a haunted rep. Based on a Stephen King short story, you have to think that Cusack’s character (a best selling horror novelist) might be King writing about himself.

CAPTIVITY: A fashion model (Elisha Cuthbert) and her chauffeur are kidnapped and held hostage by a serial killer in a small room. He terrorizes them methodically with tests and torture, but eventually the model and chauffeur draw strength from each other.

EVENING: Vanessa Redgrave plays a dying woman reflecting on her youth when she met her life’s love as her two grown daughters (Toni Collette, Claire Danes) wrestle with the issue of her impending death. (EXCLUSIVE, MARQUEE PULLMAN)

EVAN ALMIGHTY - For a little levity, you can check out a flood during our languishing drought. Steve Carell plays a self absorbed congressman who receives a visit from God (no, not George Burns, Morgan Freeman). His commandment --- build an ark; a flood is coming. “Evan Almighty” is the sequel to “Bruce Almighty

FANTASTIC FOUR RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER: Stan Lee’s Marvel Comic franchise introduce a quasi-villain, The Silver Surfer, (catch the large cool do not touch displays at certain cinemas) who’s arrival foreshadows the death of the host planet. However, The Thing, Human Torch, Invisible Girl and Mr. F have to deal with the return another challenging nemesis.

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX: The magically gifted teens are thrust into mounting crises of trust as face crises of self doubt, trust, and leadership. Naturally, you'll find the cast taking to brooms or other flying objects, practicing spells, and occasionally snuggling up with a crush. This year at Hogwarts foreshadows an oncoming evil presence and a strict, stern bureaucrat who vanquishes all the upbeat fun, camaraderie and competition which brought smiles amidst learning at the school.

KNOCKED UP: Here comes a new film from the director of “40 Year Old Virgin.” Judd Apatow has a sorta follow up, though, the virgin part is missing. An average guy (Seth Rogen) gets lucky for one night with a beauty (Katherine Heigi). So, she moves on and so does he…no, the gal’s going to have a little one. Gee, what should the dude do, keep the kid to keep the beauty or ….

LICENSE TO WED: Mandy Moore and John Krasinski have fallen in love and want to tie the knot. But to marry in the church of her choice, the couple must endure a grueling marriage preparation course concocted by Robin Williams.

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD: Bruce Willis as Det. John McClane revives the “Die Hard” franchise when internet terrorism systematically shuts down the U.S. Directed by Len Wiseman known for the “Underworld” series.

PIRATES: AT WORLD’S END: Unlike the earlier sequels which tossed special effects, action, Johnny Depp wisecracks and occasional hugs, the third installment has lengthy spells of indirection where you join the cast in a whirlpool of confusion. It’s still another intricately choreographed swashbuckling feast in the wettest and grandest tradition of Errol Flynn/Tyrone Power and other classic pirates.

RATATOUILLE: The Pixar people have returned for yet another animation feat as a Parisian rat with a sophisticated taste helps an eccentric, world famous chef with tantalizing recipes.

TRANSFORMERS – Michael Bay does not quite outdo his “Independence Day” stars and stripes July 4 glory with a live action adaptation of a toy franchise which spins a new glimpse into the Armageddon abyss.

SHREK THE THIRD: Many showstopping moments, but too many story book characters clutter up this one. More geared for the younger folks than previous installments. Still, sidesplitting at times.

SPIDERMAN III: Marvel’s third installment of Spiderman initially has Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) on the verge of a full time job at the Daily Bugle and cuddling up to Mary Jane (Kristen Dunst), his long time gal, until three villains force him to don his mask and uniform. Sandman , Venom and New Goblin Indeed, he also must contend with a substance that turns his suit black, bring out the dark side of his personality and alienating him from Mary Jane, his mom and himself.

Limited Release /Art House Films

The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Although squirt guns, rice, lighters, and other projectiles are forbidden, you can brush up on your Time Warp dance and check out those character costumes. The long running and cult favorite continues a multiple weekend run at the Cinema with the shadow cast now accompanying the on screen action. Pre Show begins @ 11:30 p.m. A “Hot Summer Night” preshow.
