WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – Score me one for two last weekend. I wrote that the screenwriter’s strike appeared headed for resolution in time for salvation of the Academy Awards gala. But, I sure blew the blurb buzz regarding the Paris Hilton “Hottie and Nottie” film.
Now, it’s a wait and see weekend at the flicks. With the ceremony on tap Sunday, Feb. 24, the megaplexes are maintaining more than usual split auditorium schedules as they wait to see which films will gain an attendance boost from exposure and/or a win at the Kodak Theatre.
For instance, “There Will Be Blood,” “No Country for Old Men” and “Juno” are three of the five best pic noms hanging around hoping for gold. “Michael Clayton” just went to DVD release and “Atonement” appears to have lost most of its buzz to “No Country” and /or “Blood.”
You’ll finally get to catch the U2 3D doc --- at Marquee --- and they are keeping Miss Montana around in several of their complexes that have a second 3-D screen. Otherwise, the alluring presidential assassination thriller, “Vantage Point” tops an otherwise mediocre string of wide releases…one of which --- “Be Kind Rewind” --- has been pushed back to a yet to be determined date.
WIDE RELEASES:
CHARLIE BARTLETT: Kicked out of every private school he’s attended, Charlie must now endure public school enrollment, where to his delight kids desperately needing something surround him. Sensing an entrepreneurial opportunity, he puts up a shingle as the youngest shrink holding sessions in the boy’s bathroom. But Charlie’s on a hot wire --- he falls for the principal’s daughter and with the school administrator on his tail, the ‘clients’ from his unauthorized shrink sessions return needed more than a pill to overcome their woes. (MGM)

U2 3D: Documentary of the rock band U2 trekking their way through South and Latin American cities (Mexico, Brazil, Chile) on their “Vertigo” tour. In 3-D. Premium added to ticket pricing (apx. $2.50)

All Pictures © National Geographic World Films
VANTAGE POINT: Secret Service agents Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) have been assigned to guard the President of the United States during a Spanish summit of the global war on terror. Once in Spain, the President is shot …. Or is he? One American tourist believes he has the shooter on his camcorder. A TV news producer relayed the event to millions across the globe. Motivations and observations are not what they seem. Some buzz warns --- the camera shots rely on point of view perspective i.e. you’ll see a lot of bobbling and eyewitness viewpoints that favored “Cloverfield” and “Blair Witch.” ( Columbia/Tri Star)

All Pictures © Columbia/Tri Star
WITLESS PROTECTION: Larry the Cable Guy patrols his little bend in the road where he is the duly authorized sheriff of the small town. When he sees a beautiful woman (Ivana Millicevic) held by four black suited strangers, he does what any brave law enforcement officer would do --- he frees her. However, it appears the dudes are FBI agents protecting the woman who is a witness in a high profile Chicago crime case. Still, everyone is not who they seem as the FBI agents have an agenda which eventually sends Larry and his beautiful captive on the road to the Windy City to figure out just who are the good and the bad guys. HOLD OVERS:
27 DRESSES: A comedy romance swirling around the “always a bridesmaid” lifestyle, Katherine Heigl stars as a selfless woman whose own “I Do” and walk down the aisle as a blushing bride appears an over the rainbow dream. After being a bridesmaid at 27 weddings, she’s secretly in love with her boss, but it seems her younger sister already has him caught in a love trap.
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: A spin off of a cartoon series, Alvin and his trio of chipmunk brothers take the concert stage all the while driving their human guardian up a tree.
BUCKET LIST: Two aging men recall what a philosophy professor called a ‘bucket list’ --- things to do before they die. Sharing a hospital room, two terminally ill men --- a billionaire (Jack Nicholson) and a mechanic (Morgan Freeman) set out on a world wide adventure testing their endurance and the clicking of the clock.
CLOVERFIELD: Expanding upon the “new journalism” where ordinary citizens submit their news footage, a group of friends gather in NYC for a going away party. During the party, a monster chops off the head of the statue of liberty and starts crunching through Manhattan. With one of their friends trapped nearby, the urge to document their struggle for survival potentially becomes the first monster movie to maintain the perspective of the victims of the carnage.
DEFINITELY, MAYBE: Dad’s in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year old daughter asks pesky precocious questions about life before marriage. And, she wants more than little nuts and bolts, she wants to know everything about how he fell in love back in 1992 when the aspiring politician moved to NYC. (Universal)
ENCHANTED: Here’s a reversal of the “fish out of water” theme: A beautiful princess Giselle ( Amy Adams ) finds herself banished from her magical, musical kingdom to the gritty hustle of the crowded streets of Manhattan. And her first shock --- she’s in a world not governed by happily ever after!
JUMPER: Would you like to snap your fingers and be on the other side of the world, or even in another world? A young man has such teleportation powers; however, he discovers the gift has been passed down for centuries and those with the power have been hunted. (20th Century Fox)
MAD MONEY: Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes work at a Federal Reserve Bank as janitors. Facing a work cycle that always underestimates their talents and paychecks that keep their dreams out of reach, the three women opt for breaking the law and rules by smuggling worn currency out of the bank that was supposed to be burned.
MEET THE SPARTANS: The makers of “Epic Movie” bring on a hunchbacked Paris Hilton in their parody of the now sword and sandal modern near classic, “300.” Sean Maguire leads 13 fellow Spartans against the Persian army. Wonder if they have any relevant Hilton jokes not already exploited?
NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS: Unearthing another treasured fortune, the gang from the first flick --- Nicholas Cage, Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha --- all return to track down missing pages of John Wilkes Booth’s diary which contain clues to a worldwide conspiracy.
RAMBO: Jungle and survival trained John Rambo did not want to get involved in any aid mission in Burma. But when the workers he assisted succumb to captivity, the brute muscle and huge gun toting one man army breaks all his vows and recruits a group of mercenaries in to rescue them. Advance word indicates that this is a multiple slingshot of adrenalin and testosterone, more than Sly doing a shirtless McConoughey imitation. Lots of explosive action afoot.
SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES: “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday” director Mark Walters pilots what’s hoped to become Paramount’s next family franchise. The first big family flick of 2008, when children move to a rundown estate they find themselves pulled into an alternate universe of faeries and creatures.
STEP UP 2 THE STREETS: Here comes the newest street dancing flick and the advance buzz suggests that Briana Evigan has cool moves and brassiness in this boy/girl version of “You Got Served.”
UNTRACABLE: Director Gregory Hoblit whose “Fracture” offered many humorous surprises, directs Diane Lane and Colin Hanks in the story of an FBI agent racing to identify and capture a killer who uses the internet to boast of his crimes.
