WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – As the tentpole season nears, Hollywood will send out films that do not fit the summer audience pattern whether for strategic, demographic, or early buzz from advance screenings before test audiences.
“21” will be the highlight of the week particularly if you like a cerebral caper type production. As a bonus, it really happened. “Stoploss,” no matter how well done must overcome a pattern of viewer avoidance of Iraq related flicks.
NEW WIDE RELEASES
21: How do you crack a Vegas casino bank? Bring in six MIT students and a professor (Kevin Spacey) trained in the art of counting cards. Based on a true story in which the academics won millions at blackjack.

All Pictures © Sony Pictures
RUN FATBOY RUN: After leaving his then fiancé (Thandie Newton) at the alter, ten years later the runaway groom (Simon Pegg) , now an overweight out of shape laxer, must compete in a marathon to prove to his latest love that he’s the one for her.

All Pictures © Picturehouse
SUPERHERO MOVIE: Although the director has written several “Scary Movie” spoof sequels, advance buzz has Craig Mazin bumbling , still clumsy boy transferred into a super powered Dragonfly failing to be either super or funny.

All Pictures © MGM
STOP LOSS: Having completed and survived his tour of duty in Iraq, a soldier (Ryan Phillippe) struggles with his decision to disobey the Armed Forces order that he return to the desert for another tour of duty.

All Pictures © Paramount Pictures
HOLD OVERS:
10,000 B.C.: Roland Emmerich, the director of “Day After Tomorrow,” “Godzilla” and “The Patriot,” brings his special effects display and big budget to the story of a young mammoth hunter. The young hunter, D’Leh, has fallen for Evolet, but she is kidnapped by a band of warlords. He and a small band of warriors pursue the warlords leading them into battles with saber tooth tigers and prehistoric predators.
BANK JOB: A group of amateur robbers find themselves lured into a heist that became one of the biggest crimes in British history. They think safe deposit boxes of London’s wealth are the targets; actually, they’ve been recruited to steal photos of a Royal princess snapped in compromising situations.
COLLEGE ROAD TRIP: An overachieving high school student (Raven Symone) wants to travel the country in search of the perfect college. Her overprotective father (Martin Lawrence) insists on accompanying her. (Walt Disney)
DRILLBIT TAYLOR: I wish I had thought of hiring a mercenary during my middle and high school days of providing both physical and verbal punching bags for numerous bullies. Now, Ryan, Wade and Emmit find themselves victimized by a Hannibal Lector-like bully when they first step through their new high school doors. Unable to handle the mistreatment, they place an ad in Soldier of Fortune Magazine for a protector (Owen Marshall) (Paramount)
NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS: Unearthing another treasured fortune, the gang from the first flick --- Nicholas Cage, Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha --- all return to track down missing pages of John Wilkes Booth’s diary which contain clues to a worldwide conspiracy.
SHUTTER: The Japanese have churned out a string of original suspense/horror flicks, and, now comes an Americanized version of Shutter in which a photographer and his wife head to the island nation for a working honeymoon only to have their car crash into a woman standing in the middle of the road to Mt. Fuji. Once they regain consciousness, no trace of the woman can be found. But when the photographer begins his shoot, white blurs mar his photographs. Could it be an image of the dead woman?
SEMI PRO – A one hit chart topper makes enough to own a basketball team, but Jackie (Will Ferrell) Moon has the ABA franchise for the Flint Michigan Tropics, the worst team in a league ready to merge with the NBA and leave under performers facing, oblivion. (New Line Cinema)
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL: Two of the screens hottest ladies --- Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson --- via for the heart of King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). However, one truly desires his love, the other’s goal is to be queen. The screenplay is by Peter Morgan (“The Last King of Scotland” and “The Queen”) so, the un-previewed question asked by viewers may be will this be a dull period romance or an edgy, scratchy battle of two woman attempting to chain a single man. (Sony)
TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS: Struggling in Chicago with three children to raise and keep off the streets, a single mom learns she has been laid off. But a letter arrives announcing the death of a father she’s never met. She takes her family south to the funeral, but adjusting to the family she never knew existed brings intense struggles, too.
VANTAGE POINT: Secret Service agents Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) have been assigned to guard the President of the United States during a Spanish summit of the global war on terror. Once in Spain, the President is shot …. Or is he? One American tourist believes he has the shooter on his camcorder. A TV news producer relayed the event to millions across the globe. Motivations and observations are not what they seem. Some buzz warns --- the camera shots rely on point of view perspective i.e. you’ll see a lot of bobbling and eyewitness viewpoints that favored “Cloverfield” and “Blair Witch.” ( Columbia/Tri Star)
WITLESS PROTECTION: Larry the Cable Guy patrols his little bend in the road where he is the duly authorized sheriff of the small town. When he sees a beautiful woman (Ivana Millicevic) held by four black suited strangers, he does what any brave law enforcement officer would do --- he frees her. However, it appears the dudes are FBI agents protecting the woman who is a witness in a high profile Chicago crime case. Still, everyone is not who they seem as the FBI agents have an agenda which eventually sends Larry and his beautiful captive on the road to the Windy City to figure out just who are the good and the bad guys. (Lion’s Gate)
