WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – It’s the last weekend before the tent-poles take over. Even now cinemas are working out their arrangements for the first early showing of “Iron Man,” which will occur late Thursday night or at one minute past midnight on Friday May 1.
The Marvel comic adaptation kicks off the summer season as Indiana Jones, Chronicles of Narnia and Speed Racer.
But, this weekend, it’s a woman’s struggle with her surrogate, two dudes mistaken for terrorists and an accounting consultant plunging into the world of erotic underground sex clubs.
Or, you could take a hard look at some of the flicks you skipped on their opening weekends. As the summer tent-poles roll, these hold-overs will be quickly replaced by multiple screen showings of the week’s biggest attraction.
That could mean catching the brainy Las Vegas blackjack counters in “21,” venturing into the early days of pro football with “Leatherheads,” or laughing at the socially inept gender movies of so-called “Smart People.”
THIS WEEK'S WIDE RELEASES:
BABY MAMA: A Single businesswoman has put off having a baby. Now at 37, she finds there's only a one in a million chance for her to conceive. So, she hires a South Philly working girl to be a surrogate. But the expectant mom is full of vibrancy so it's a tug of war attempting to structure the blonde lady into following all the rules necessary to have a perfect child. Tina Fey , Amy Poehler and Sigourney Weaver star.

DECEPTION: Hugh Jackson stars as an accounting consultant who meets a charismatic womanizing lawyer who personfies everything the number crunches wishes he could be. In fact, the accountant introduces him to an erotic underground sex club. Evan McGregor and Michelle Williams also star.

HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY: While the title characters munch at White Castle, Harold learns that a girl he lusts after is heading to Amsterdam. They decide to follow her and due to an overzealous airline employee and mistaken identities, the duo are seized as terrorists.

HOLD OVERS:
21: How do you crack a Vegas casino bank? Bring in six MIT students and a professor (Kevin Spacey) trained in the art of counting cards. Based on a true story in which the academics won millions at blackjack It drags in places, and, pardon my ignorance, but the non-crime of card counting that leads to beatings to the pulp of the counters leaves me pondering… if it isn't illegal, then, how come you get away with picking on the brainy talented dudes?
88 MINUTES: Moonlihgting as a forensic shrink for the FBI, a professor (Al Pacino) receives death threats by phone from an individual he helped convict telling him he has only 88 minutes to live.
COLLEGE ROAD TRIP: An overachieving high school student (Raven Symone) wants to travel the country in search of the perfect college. Her overprotective father (Martin Lawrence) insists on accompanying her. (Walt Disney)
DRILLBIT TAYLOR: I wish I had thought of hiring a mercenary during my middle and high school days of providing both physical and verbal punching bags for numerous bullies. Now, Ryan, Wade and Emmit find themselves victimized by a Hannibal Lector-like bully when they first step through their new high school doors. Unable to handle the mistreatment, they place an ad in Soldier of Fortune Magazine for a protector (Owen Marshall) (Paramount)
EXPELLED NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED: Actor Ben Stein whose filmography stretches from the 80s to the present day, heads a film that documents the repression of scientific beliefs of intelligent (creation) design be it by a god, force or entity. The film takes no stand to endorse a particular belief, it simply demonstrates that the idea has been stonewalled by powerful atheistic followers of the Darwin theories of evolution. (Exclusive: Marquee Pullman, Marquee Southridge, Marquee Galleria 14)
FORBIDDEN KINGDOM: Jackie Chan and Jet Li unite for the first time for a kung-fu comedy based on the Chinese legion of the Monkey King.
FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL: Produced by “Knocked Up” comedy guru Judd Apatow, the story has Jason Segel unsuccessfully handling the break up with his ex-TV star girl friend (Kristen Bell). Friends persuade him to take a trip to Hawaii to forget her, but, oops, she’s there with her new boyfriend. (Universal)
LEATHERHEADS: Although the people of Maysville, Ky. Received an early showing since George Clooney calls the small Bluegrass State community home, the rest of the country can watch an aging football legend (Clooney, who else?) and a college star (John Krasinski) vying both for spots on a professional team but for the romantic offerings of a gutsy, female sports journalist (Renee Zellweger). Oh, the flick takes place in 1925.
NIM’S ISLAND: Jodie Foster plays an author attempting to assist a fan whose father is missing on a secret island. Billed as a possible Indiana Jones for the sweeter gender, Of course, the author has her share of psychological dilemmas --- she has a fear of leaving her house and , well, the “fan” with the missing father is actually the title character in her novels. Advance word: goofy, sweet, comedic.
NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS: Unearthing another treasured fortune, the gang from the first flick --- Nicholas Cage, Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha --- all return to track down missing pages of John Wilkes Booth’s diary which contain clues to a worldwide conspiracy.
PROM NIGHT: Remaking another contemporary horror standard, Brittany Snow stars as Donna who’s senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. However, a killer from the past stalks she and her friends… all of whom witnessed an accidental death years ago. Now, they must find a way to escape the man seeking sadistic revenge. The original was released in 1980 and followed by three sequels.
RUN FATBOY RUN: After leaving his then fiancé (Thandie Newton) at the alter, ten years later the runaway groom (Simon Pegg) , now an overweight out of shape laxer, must compete in a marathon to prove to his latest love that he's the one for her. (Exclusive, Marquee Pullman)
SEMI PRO – A one hit chart topper makes enough to own a basketball team, but Jackie (Will Ferrell) Moon has the ABA franchise for the Flint Michigan Tropics, the worst team in a league ready to merge with the NBA and leave under performers facing, oblivion. (New Line Cinema)
SMART PEOPLE: Coming from the Sundance Film Festival, Sarah (“Sex in the City”) Jessica Parker agrees to take in her injured former professor (Dennis Quaid). But the doctor does not realize all the baggage that comes in tow with the professor --- his Young Republican daughter, a loafing adopted brother, and it seems the injured man can quite properly express his affection for his former student. (Exclusive, Marquee Pullman Square, Southridge)
STREET KINGS: After losing his wife, a veteran LAPD cop (Keanu Reeves) finds himself implicated in the execution of a fellow officer, which forces him to challenge the same ‘cop culture’ to which he’s been loyal during his entire career. David (“Harsh Times”) Ayer directs a film that originally had Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, and David Fincher ready to sign on to helm the pic.
SUPERHERO MOVIE: Although the director has written several "Scary Movie" spoof sequels, advance buzz has Craig Mazin bumbling , still clumsy boy transferred into a super powered Dragonfly failing to be either super or funny. Actually, it's kinda in the middle, a bunch of sketches strung together…
STOP LOSS: Having completed and survived his tour of duty in Iraq, a soldier (Ryan Phillippe) struggles with his decision to disobey the Armed Forces order that he return to the desert for another tour of duty.
THE RUINS: From a brief read of the preview for this flick, I can say, guess it’s Mexico’s time to be slaughter setting, rather than our own state. American tourists head south of the border and into the jungle to search for the missing brother of a traveler. You guessed it, they venture into an isolated portion near a hillside and encounter, well, fill in the blank, it’s a horror flick. You know the answer. I don’t have to tell you. Shawn Ashmore, Jena Malone and Jonathan Tucker star.
TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS: Struggling in Chicago with three children to raise and keep off the streets, a single mom learns she has been laid off. But a letter arrives announcing the death of a father she’s never met. She takes her family south to the funeral, but adjusting to the family she never knew existed brings intense struggles, too.
WITLESS PROTECTION: Larry the Cable Guy patrols his little bend in the road where he is the duly authorized sheriff of the small town. When he sees a beautiful woman (Ivana Millicevic) held by four black suited strangers, he does what any brave law enforcement officer would do --- he frees her. However, it appears the dudes are FBI agents protecting the woman who is a witness in a high profile Chicago crime case. Still, everyone is not who they seem as the FBI agents have an agenda which eventually sends Larry and his beautiful captive on the road to the Windy City to figure out just who are the good and the bad guys. (Lion’s Gate)
