WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Last week the multiplex beamed with new offerings and, at least, one, The Rocker, has already been relegated to one show a day schedules. Actually, “Death Race” could follow as it’s a clunky track for the futuristic no holds barred NASCAR without rules demolition derby.

Remaking the 1975 cult Roger Corman flick “Death Race 2000,” the new movie makes the most of daring driving, explosives, and fiery escapes. Hailed as a PPV version of Roman gladiators fighting to the death, any prisoner who wins five races receives a pardon.

Unless you gain a rush from repeated crashes and bullets, viewers may start asking many questions about the film’s assembly. For instance, the event is trumpeted as one with testosterone and sex flowing. Bad gal prisoners serve as driver navigators. However, aside from one scene, when the cars tumble, crash, and come to rest, only a driver crawls out.

The original on which this is allegedly based had drivers racing cross-country in fortified vehicles had distinct elements of political satire. This version may as well be labeled a rough housing video game, where, perhaps, only the climax comes with a tiny surprise.

Films opening this week do so in a split Wednesday – Friday fashion. The promising “Hamlet 2” comedy debuts Wednesday. “Disaster Movie” culls my fascination: During one evening a group of twenty-somethings must deal with a plague of natural disasters and catastrophic events. It’s from the “Date Movie” and “Meet the Spartan” genre with Carmen Electra… but this could be one of those one joke guilty pleasures.

The Traitor and Hamlet II open Wednesday Aug. 27; Babylon AD, College, Disaster Movie open Fri. Aug. 29.

FILMS OPENING WIDE THIS WEEKEND (Not all titles in all areas)

Aug. 27:

HAMLET II: A high school drama teacher tries to save the program by penning an updated sequel to the Shakespearan classic. (Marquee Pullman, Southridge, Galleria, Highlands 14)

All Pictures © Focus Features

TRAITOR: A special operations officer with ties to Afghan rebels leads to FBI agent Roy Clayton (Guy Pearce) tracking him throughout the Middle East. But the evidence soon becomes contradictory. Jeffrey Nachmanoff who wrote “The Day After Tomorrow” is on the screenplay. Might be worth checking out.

All Pictures © Overture Films

Aug. 29:

Babylon A.D.: Vin Diesel plays a mercenary delivering a mysterious young woman from the ravages of post-apocalyptic Eastern Europe to the megalopolis known as NYC.

All Pictures © 20th Century Fox

College: Predicted to be an unmemorable Superbad-esque comedy for the You Tube generation, three high school seniors (Drake Bell, Kevin Covais, Andrew Caldwell) visit a college campus posing as prospective freshmen.

All Pictures © MGM

DISASTER MOVIE: The premise has possibilities, but the lack of buzz seems to suggest it might not live up to expectations. Spoofing characters surviving filmed catastrophes,

All Pictures © Lionsgate

Sept. 6:

Accidental Husband: A talk radio host (Uma Thurman) advises a listener to break up with her boyfriend, but the dumped ex (Colin Firth) sets his designs on Thurman for revenge.

All Pictures © Yari Film Group

BANKKOK DANGEROUS: Lonely hitman Nicholas Cage falls for a local woman. Reworking a double crossed hit man in love theme, Cage trains a mentor in his craft. Buzz: Cool visual style.

All Pictures © Lionsgate

HOLD OVERS:

FLY ME TO THE MOON: Having started its release in Belgium, this 3-D movie follows three houseflies who sneak aboard the Apollo 11 lunar mission.

HANCOCK: Will (“Men in Black”) Smith bumbles along as a conflicted, sarcastic superhero who saves lives but leaves lots of damage along the trail. Having turned the public against his awesomely stupid deeds, the hero makes a life-changing connection with a housewife

The House Bunny: Tossed out of the Playboy mansion, Shelly (Anna Faris) can’t find a place to lay her tail until she meets the seven most socially clueless sorority girls from Zeta Tau Zeta who need strong dose of her bubbly social etiquette.

INDIANA JONES AND THE CRYSTAL SKULL: Steven Spielberg directs the return of everyone’s favorite globetrotting adventurer who’s been on the shelf for nearly 20 years. George Lucas teams with David Koepp on the screenplay, but it’s under wraps. However, Harris Ford reprises his role, even though his age is starting to limit his death defying stunts.

Kung Fu Panda: Not exactly “Happy Feet,” but the big, clumsy Po labors daily in his family’s noodle shop dreaming about Kung Fu. But the bear has been chosen to fulfill a prophesy, so can the panda actually become a kung fun master? (Voices include Jackie Chan, Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman)

Mamma Mia! Last summer’s “Hairspray” proved that the movie musical can still reign under the summer sun, so now comes another Broadway icon with Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosna on the marquee. A bride to be raised on a Greek island by a mother refusing to disclose her dad’s identity, locates three possible ‘dads’ and invites them to the wedding. Yes, you get to hear ABBA’s greatest hits!

MIRRORS: Alexandre Aja known for his chilling “Hills Have Eyes,” “High Tension,” and “P2,” casts Kiefer Suterland, Paula Patton and Cameron Boyce in a tale of a mall security guard who finds the mirrors of a department store bring out the worst in those who stare into them.

Pineapple Express: An addict (Seth Rogen) witnesses a corrupt cop commit murder, now he and his dealer (James Franco) go on a save their hide road trip to escape a squad of officers who want them wasted. The title comes from a rare new strain of weed. It reunited you with the dudes who brought last summer’s “Superbad” to the megaplex.

Rocker: A drummer gets dumped from a 80s band just before they hit superstardom. Twenty years later after toiling at a real job, the musician has a second chance at his rock and roll fantasy.

SEX AND THE CITY: The movie picks up four year after the six-year-run wrapped in 2004 on HBO. Sarah Jessica Parker returns as Carrie Bradshaw, the style conscious journalist whose romantic exploits ruled the series. As the story continues, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda prepare for Carrie to take the marital plunge

Sisterhood of Traveling Pants II: Best friends (Alexis Biedel, America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn. and Blake Lively) reunite in a Grecian seaside town during their first year of college to locate their missing magical jeans. Incidentally, wise producers contractually obligated these stars of “Gilmore Girls,” “Ugly Betty,” “Joan of Arcadia” and “Gossip Girl” to reunite.

Space Chimps: Cutting edge CGI animation propels this out of the world adventure in which NASA recruits Ham III, grandson of the first chimpanzee in space, to save a $5 billion probe that fell into a galactic wormhole.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: The animated film depicts the period between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The animate flick chronicles the on-going battles between the Jedis of the Republic and the droids of the Trade Federation.

Step Brothers: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly re-team with the director of “Talladega Nights” in this comedy of pampered best friends who single parents decide to marry. Judd (“Knocked Up,” “40 Year Old Virgin”) Apatow is one of the producers.

STRANGERS: Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play a young couple staying in an isolated vacation home when a knock on the door in the mid-hours of darkness. Soon, they are fighting for their lives as three masked strangers invade their space.

TROPIC THUNDER: Actors on location for a big budget war flick find themselves relying on their boot camp experiences (or lack thereof) when they get caught up in a real conflict. Ben (“Night at the Museum,” “Heartbreak Kid”) Stiller directs and stars with Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Brandon Jackson and Matthew (Jack Lengyel in “WAM”) McConaughey. Tom Cruise appears in a cameo.

WALL-E: Pixar Animation Studios. ‘Nuff said. After hundreds of years picking up humanities trash on the Planet Earth, a search robot EVE discovers that the Waste Allocation Load Lifter robot may have found the meaning of life and a way for human to return home safely. Characters include malfunctioning robot misfits and a pet cockroach.

WANTED: A young man (James McAvoy) finds that his recently murder father was an elite assassin. Now he’s recruited by a man named Sloan (Morgan Freeman) to step into his dad’s shoes. Angelina Jolie also stars. Incidentally, the concept comes from a dark comic with similarity to “Sin City” and “V for Vendetta.”
