WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Do you think Oliver Stone’s “W” will ignite a ruckus similar to the one stirred by the portrayal of West Virginia University fans in “The Express?”

Stone’s cinematic history began with the screenplay for the acclaimed “Midnight Express” and soon moved to writing and directorial duties on the Oscar winning “Platoon,” as well as “Born on the Fourth of July,” “J.F.K.,” the prophetic “Wall Street” and “World Trade Center.”

Blending researched historical events with elements of fiction (often to express a political ideology), his films have splattered gory war realities as well as started the nation talking about his leaps, which remain ambiguous as to authentication or speculation. Based on early reports, “W” will bring more of the same.

The first so-called biography of a sitting President, Stone’s “W” (I have not yet seen it) apparently in part portrays President George W. as an immature son seeking daddy’s approval for his Oval Office decisions. A preview viewing writer indicated that Stone has tried to portray the President as a sympathetic character struggling to “do good” when surrounded by a den of rogue advisors, such as the villainous Dick Cheney (Richard Dreyfuss) and Carl Rove (Toby Jones). Also in the cast, Elizabeth Banks plays the First Lady, James Cromwell as W’s dad, and Ellen Burstyn as Barbara.

Interestingly, the previewer stresses that the difference between meticulously researched scenes and those of conjecture or obvious political statement will be easy to find if you have kept up on the news during Bush’s eight years in office.

Josh Brolin studied tapes in order to speak with W’s Texas accent, and, the rugged “No Country for Old Men” star turned down many higher paying offers for the opportunity to be the president.

Before moving on to the two other pics opening wide this weekend, your Wednesday and Thursday might be film filled should you want to scurry down and catch numerous flicks that didn’t do well --- “Blindness,” “How to Win Friends,” “American Carol,” --- on their final big screen lap.

In addition, the FALL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL wraps up Thursday at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center. You can still catch Sangre De Mi Sangre (Mexico) Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. followed by “The Counterfeiters” at 7:30 p.m.; on Thursday Oct. 16 , the Fall fest wraps with “The Band’s Visit” 5:30 p.m. and “Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden at 7:30 p.m., if you have not already done so.

Digitally equipped theatres host a special concert event, Monday, Oct. 20 with the Beatles: All Together Now documentary. Marquee plans one showing only at their theatres, but Park Place and Fountain Place will have three showings that evening.

Finally, goblin and bloodletting time approaches. The horror film slate, naturally, has a new “Saw” flick to grab attention, but I’ve found the currently released “Quarantine,” which combines the one jittery camera “Cloverfield” picture with a twist on the flesh eating zombie premises. In fact, I head a moviegoer (female) state that it kept her frozen to her seat. Heed those words of mouth, unless you have an unsettled stomach and/or motion sickness.

ALSO OPENING WIDE OCTOBEER 17:

MAX PAYNE: Video game comes to the screen as Mark Wahlberg embodies a widowed cop delivering justice at no matter what the cost.

Beloved for her trendsetting fashions and political activism, she clashes with her husband’s control over her. On their trek through Manhattan , they will find stripping nuns, hotel ice rooms, psychotic Jewish ex-boyfriends yet discover they can write songs and sing together in the rain.
