WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – The new buzzing James Bond “Quantum of Solace” officially kicks off the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday movie slate, which will unleash (with the exception of "Punisher" and “Transporter III”) a blockbuster period without reliance on Roman numerals following the title.
Technically, “Quantum” would have a numeral after it, but the James Bond franchise has remarkably carried forth through the decades without the need to rely on follow up marketing. The Bond “girls” change and James himself has been portrayed by many actors, but the Cold War based spy thrillers keep entertaining fans as Bond (Daniel Craig) globe trots, this time with the lovely Camille (Olga Kurylenko) , a feisty Russian, by his side.
Of course, if you’d like to wallow in a little nostalgia, head up to Charleston for the 20th Anniversary screening of Daniel Boyd’s “Chillers” at the Capitol, 123 Summers Street. For details of films remaining on the fall West Virginia International Festival, visit, http://www.wviff.org . The 1988 horror spoof has five lonely travelers stranded overnight in a West Virginia bus depot. The reception begins at 6 p.m. on Nov. 14 followed by the film at 7 p.m. “The Visitor” follows at 9 p.m. and “The Last Mistress” at 11 p.m.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, you can watch a free screening of “The Comic Book Lady” at 10 a.m. Shot in Huntington, the much praised indie film has gotten lots of film fest buzz. For info: http://www.samholdren.com . You can see Holdren’s “Audition” at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Capitol.
Though you can't be in two places at the same time, also on Friday, Nov. 14, you could stop by the Java Joint for a screening of "Meth Man," a Huntington made independent flick.
Moving back to the mainstream, some theatres on Saturday, Nov. 15 will be sneaking the newest Disney animated 3D film, “Bolt,” which features the voices of Miley Cyrus and John Travolta. The Super dog , Bolt, endures a cross country journey to reconnect with his owner after he’s shipped from a Hollywood soundstage to NYC.
“Bolt” will open on Nov. 21 along with the buzzing “Twilight,” a vampire saga which has hopes of filling a bit of the gap that Harry Potter will leave open. Belle (Kristen Stewart) has always been different. She did not fit in with the trendy girls in high school. When she moves to a small town in Washington, Belle meets a witty and handsome boy who connects immediately with her soul. But her beau has not aged since 1918. Vampire meets soul mate, but her scent threatens to bring out the animal in him.
As Santa’s time to fall down the chimney approaches, additional contenders for your holiday entertainment will gradually move into the megaplexes.
November 26 brings a comedy featuring Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn and Mary Steenburgen as a married couple seek to avoid spending the holidays with their dysfunction relatives. When they’re seen on the news at an airport with a canceled flight, their families will not allow them to escape town.
“Four Christmases” will share the date with Nichole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in an adventure set pre-World War II in Australia, where Kidman (playing an aristocrat) inherits 2,000 head of cattle. During a cattle drive, Japanese forces bomb Darwin, Australia.
On December 5, Marvel Comic’s "Punisher" continues his vow to punish criminals who have escaped justice. Rumors have it that director Lexi Alexander was relieved of duties in the summer so that more violence could be added. Ironically, now rumors have it that it’s being trimmed to avoid an R-rating. Frank Castle (the Punisher’s alter ego) will be played by Ray Stevenson while Jigsaw will be played by Dominic West.
On December 12, aliens land on Earth with a warning message to its inhabitants concerning their zeal for war and nuclear power. “The Day the Earth Stood Still” made in 1951 has achieved top of the heap classic status, so it will be difficult to see Keanu Reeves in Michael Rennie’s role. The 1951 version contained a robot and a flying saucer for special effects; however, the new version will based on the previews have disintegrating weapons.
OPENING NOV. 14
QUANTUM SOLACE: Picking up where “Casino Royale” ended, Daniel Craig returns as Agent 007 pursues Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a business man and leader of an organization set to overthrow the leaders of a Latin American country which would place it in the hands of an exiled General. During the globehopping, Bond meets Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a feisty Russian with her own vendetta.

COMING NOV. 21
BOLT: Super dog Bolt (voice John Travolta) is accidentally shipped from the Hollywood soundstage to NYC. Now the dog must endure a cross country journey to reunite with his owner , Penny (voice Miley Cyrus). However, Bolt believes that his powers are real, not just television special effects so he will need an abandoned housecat and a hamster to try to find Penny. (Produced in 3-D)

TWILIGHT: Belle (Kristen Stewart) has always been different. She did not fit in with the trendy girls in high school. When she moves to a small town in Washington , Belle meets a witty and handsome boy who connects immediately with her soul. But her beau has not aged since 1918. Vampire meets soul mate, but her scent threatens to bring out the animal in him.

HOLD OVERS:
APPALOSSA: After a rancher (Jeremy Irons) who feels above the law guns down the town sheriff and deputy, townspeople pray for a savior to free them from the power hungry rancher. Two rugged straight shooters (Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen) ride into town and become the new sheriff and deputy. Renee Zellweger also stars. (Marquee Beckley, Charleston, Huntington, Wheeling, Wythville, Va.)
Body of Lies: When a CIA agent (Leonardo DiCaprio) finds that a terrorist leader may be operating out of Jordan , he finds a vet CIA operative ( Russell Crowe) to infiltrate the saboteur’s underground network. Ridley Scott directs.
Beverly Hills Chihuahua: Combining live action and animation, the voice of Drew Barrymore speaks for Chloe, a snobby Beverly Hills little pooch who’s lost in Mexico and needs to find California.
City of Embers: Gil (“Monster House”) Kenan directs a children’s fantasy about two teens seeking to prevent the destruction of an underground illuminated city which may be extinguished by darkness. Call it a mix of Truman Show and Dark City.
Eagle Eye: Reuniting the director and a hot dude from “Disturbia,” D. J. Caruso directs Shia LaBeouf in a Hitchcock type thriller where a dude and his mom fall unwittingly into a terror cell planning an assassination
HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY: Seeking a fresh start Molly (Haley Bennett) moves to a new school where she finds new, innocent friends willing to help her fit in. But Molly has a sinister secret and it’s about who she might become.
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL SENIOR YEAR: Seniors Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Anne Hudgens) must face separation anxiety as college looms. Of course, they stage a musical which assembles their experiences, hopes and fears about the future.
MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo and the penguins find themselves marooned in Madagascar. The penguins repair an old plane but the air vehicle crashes in darkest Africa. Will the home of relatives be a place where the Central Park zoo animals can adapt?
Nights in Rodanthe: Faced with her life in chaos, Adrienna (Diane Lane) retreats to a small North Carolina town to tend a small inn so she can think out the crisis. However, a storm moves in and so does a guest: Dr Paul Flanner (Richard Gere). Both lean on each other to face the elements and emotions.
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN 3D: A critically acclaimed stop-motion animated fable about Halloweentown where residents work year round to scare humans. When Jack Skellington (voice Chris Sarandon) learns about another human holiday --- Christmas --- he seeks to add shrunken heads and snakes to Santa and his reindeer. Showing at Park Place Stadium Cinemas (Charleston), Fountain Place (Logan) and Marquee’s digital screens in Huntington, Charleston, Bluefield/Wythville, Wheeling, and Beckley.
ROLE MODELS: After Danny and Wheeler (Paul Rudd and Seann Scott) trash a company truck on an energy drink high, they’re given a choice of hard time or 150 hours mentoring teens confined to a center for juvenile behavior. Danny can offer only sarcasm for his bashful 16-year-old mentor who is obsessed by medieval role play; after all, Danny just got dumped by his gal (Elizabeth Banks, yes, the same one from “W” and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) . As for Wheeler, he’s an overgrown adolescent still doing keg qualify time.
SOUL MEN: Following the death of a legendary musical group leader, Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, a duo who long ago went separate ways, find themselves invited to a reunion at New York’s historic Apollo Theatre. Can they make it across country, perform on stage, and bury the grudge?
SAW V: Opening a week before Halloween, David Hackl, the production designer of prior Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) features except for the opening opus, directs. As you remember the villain perished in the fourth installment, but his traps have Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) , the forensic expert, who uttered, “Everyone around him [the SWAT commander] keeps dying,” now attempts to avoid falling prey to a trap.
THE CHANGLING: Having debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, Clint Eastwood directs this conspiracy thriller set in Los Angeles of the 1920s. Angelina Jolie portrays a mother reunited with her missing son, but after questioning if this is HER child, she is committed to an insane asylum. Possible awards buzz has already started for the film which comes from the same genre as “Chinatown” and “L.A. Confidential.”
ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO: Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks enter the amateur porn film arena after the two friends find themselves horribly in debt and (naturally) with romantic feelings toward the other. Kevin (“Clerks,” “Jersey Girl,” “Chasing Amy,” “Clerks II”) Smith directs the R-rated comedy whose title has caused at least 15 newspapers, several TV and cable channels, and the City of Philadelphia to reject its advertising. Not to be defeated, the producers created an ad using stick figures. But the Philly deputy mayor said they were “cute” but would not allow schoolchildren to see the word “porno” at bus stops.
