WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – Ho… ho… ho… unless you are a super hero fan, the cinematic offerings are a still sizzling sauté of Thanksgiving week leftovers. Before, you check them out below, here’s what to anticipate in the next couple of pre-Christmas weeks.
Since shopping tends to overshadow cinema attendance, studios compensate by spreading out releases and squarely aiming for separate demographic groups until the Christmas holiday movie season hits with full force on Christmas Day and a few days beforehand. Meantime, the weekly openings from Hollywood mindsets hopefully have enough interest to hold in the megaplex past January 1, 2009.
Large cities (a.k.a. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco) gain lots of awards caliber releases, many of which do not make it down into the smaller cities until AFTER Christmas or Christmas Day. That’s the case with "Frost/Nixon" which debuts this week in three cities, but will be expanding into some smaller venues on Dec. 25.
The third installment of Marvel’s Punisher series “War Zone” opens wide Friday. It’s likely the ONLY new flick to open in the West Virginia region.

The vigilante/anti-hero (Ray Stevenson) massacres a bunch of mob types at a “beat the rap” party. Among the survivors a disfigured zealous gangster and among the dead, an undercover FBI agent. The mutilated man becomes “Jigsaw” and kidnaps the innocent family of the FBI agent, which brings a distraught Punisher back into the streets.
On December 12, “Day the Earth Stood Still” , a remake of a 50s science fiction classic, will be the stand out attraction, while the animated, “Delgo,” and the live action “Nothing Like the Holidays” will join “Earth.”

Will Smith’s “Seven Pounds,” which has been received allusions to “The Pursuit of Happyness” will debut on Dec. 19 along with Jim Carrey’s “Yes Man” and the all-star animated “voice of” Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, Tracey Ullman, Sigourney Weaver’s “Tales of Despereaux,” adapted from the children’s book of the same name.

You’ve likely seen a preview trailers for “Doubt,” “Revolutionary Road,” “Milk,” and “The Reader.” These are considered “limited” releases, one or more of which MAY reach Beckley, Charleston, Huntington or Wheeling before Santa comes down the chimney. Those that do not, will open in January/February 2009, subject to the Academy and Golden Globe Award hype.
FOUR CHRISTMASES

All Pictures © Warner Brothers
How to have a happy relationship? Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) have found the formula for them --- no “I Do’s,” no children, and not visiting the family on the holidays. Their three years of boisterous and spontaneous romance faces its strongest test when at their airport for a flight to a tropical isle, San Francisco fog kills all flights… and, they have the misfortune of ending up in front of a television news camera.
Having avoided their toxic divorced family members for three years, they now can’t swing the out of the country holiday charity projects excuse. Brad and Kate must visit their families.
As the visits begin, their fresh, hugging, glittering eyes, and smiling kisses lifestyle screeches to a halt. With each visit, the other partner learns a previously unknown quirk about the others days growing up. That sets off the “can I trust” meter followed rapidly by deadly “comparison” games (to other married couples), encountering multiple “weights” on their independence (relative’s children), and hearing and seeing each other under the thumbs of pleasing parent syndromes, which wreck havoc on the just you and me relationship.
Although “Four Christmases” is, yes, standard situation comedy, holiday folly, the premise earns mistletoe for adopting the divorced visitations and an array of simple surprises that rapidly send the perfect couple’s doubt-meter off the wall.
Special kudos for the tsunami from a “I can do it myself” satellite dish mounting and incorporation of a charismatic church service that places Brad and Kate as substitute Mary and Joseph’s.
This is lightweight and harmless. You can take a date or friend and make fun of your own holiday family disasters.
Personally, I’m critical of the resolution. Too easy. Too quickly. Too Hollywood.
Meanwhile, if you have a great romance in bloom and are avoiding family visits, have a back up plan for staying out of the way of live television news cameras.
HOLD OVERS:
Beverly Hills Chihuahua: Combining live action and animation, the voice of Drew Barrymore speaks for Chloe, a snobby Beverly Hills little pooch who’s lost in Mexico and needs to find California.
Eagle Eye: Reuniting the director and a hot dude from “Disturbia,” D. J. Caruso directs Shia LaBeouf in a Hitchcock type thriller where a dude and his mom fall unwittingly into a terror cell planning an assassination
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL SENIOR YEAR: Seniors Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Anne Hudgens) must face separation anxiety as college looms. Of course, they stage a musical which assembles their experiences, hopes and fears about the future.
MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo and the penguins find themselves marooned in Madagascar. The penguins repair an old plane but the air vehicle crashes in darkest Africa. Will the home of relatives be a place where the Central Park zoo animals can adapt?
ROLE MODELS: After Danny and Wheeler (Paul Rudd and Seann Scott) trash a company truck on an energy drink high, they’re given a choice of hard time or 150 hours mentoring teens confined to a center for juvenile behavior. Danny can offer only sarcasm for his bashful 16-year-old mentor who is obsessed by medieval role play; after all, Danny just got dumped by his gal (Elizabeth Banks, yes, the same one from “W” and “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) . As for Wheeler, he’s an overgrown adolescent still doing keg qualify time.
SAW V: Opening a week before Halloween, David Hackl, the production designer of prior Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) features except for the opening opus, directs. As you remember the villain perished in the fourth installment, but his traps have Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) , the forensic expert, who uttered, “Everyone around him [the SWAT commander] keeps dying,” now attempts to avoid falling prey to a trap.
THE CHANGLING: Having debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, Clint Eastwood directs this conspiracy thriller set in Los Angeles of the 1920s. Angelina Jolie portrays a mother reunited with her missing son, but after questioning if this is HER child, she is committed to an insane asylum. Possible awards buzz has already started for the film which comes from the same genre as “Chinatown” and “L.A. Confidential.”
