WEEKEND FIRST: Movie Comings and Goings

By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor

Huntington, WV (HNN) – Now, the real race for box office gold and platinum begins in force. Many school systems have shut down for the summer, which means students will be looking for additional recreation and diversions. As a result, many of the cinemas in the region, have already started their “summer” hours, which means that matinees run seven days a week, rather than just on Saturday and Sundays.

Many cinemas will be offering weekly early morning (Tuesday and/or Wednesday) free children’s showings of favorites such as “Horton Hears a Who,” “Space Chimps,” and “Kung Fu Panda.” Other cinemas (such as Teays Valley) add morning showings Monday through Saturday, rather than simply Saturday and holidays.

On June 24, a new theatre will be opening in the Huntington Mall. The 12-screen stadium seating complex replaces one that closed several years ago.

THIS WEEKS OPENINGS:

THE HANGOVER: Here comes what many predict as the summer comedy sleeper. Director Todd (“Old School,” “Road Trip”) watched a steady diet of screwball comedy growing up, like “Stripes” and “Revenge of the Nerds,” but you would recognize him best as an Oscar nominated writer of “Borat.” Now, he’s cast Bradley (“Yes Man,” “The Rocker”) Cooper in a Vegas bachelor party gone bonkers. When the three groomsman awake, there’s a tiger in the bathroom of their suit and a six-month old baby in the closet. At ShowWest, Curtis McCall, caught a clip and told us, it’s a comedy of the Aptow style. “It could be hilarious. I don’t think people are aware of it right now, I think it will have a lot of bite.”

LAND OF THE LOST: Don’t write this off as just typical family friendly. Will Ferrell stars in what , based on buzz, will spoof a fabled 70s Saturday cartoon show with lots of creatures populating an alternate universe. He’s paired with a redneck survivalist (Danny McBride) and a female research assistant (Anna Friel).

MY LIFE IN RUINS: Nia (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) Vardalos stars as a travel guide leading a troupe of rag-tag tourists to see the beauty of Greece, while she dreams of finding another more substantial job.

HOLD OVERS:

DRAG ME TO HELL: Alison (“Beowulf,” “Delirious”) Lohman has a chip on her shoulder --- she wants to be the first female loan officer at her bank. After competing with the boys club, she’s also been warned that a woman might not be tough enough for the position. An elderly woman (Loren Raver) gets down on hands and knees begging for an extension on her mortgage. To impress her boss, Lohman says, “No.” As a result, the lady puts a curse on her which transforms her life into hell on earth while she awaits a demon to collect her soul for eternal damnation.

I LOVE YOU, MAN: Here’s a subtle twist on the chick flicks, call this a “bro” film. When Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) gets a yes from Zooey (Rashida Jones), he realizes that his withdrawn personality has left him without any friends, specifically ‘best man’ at their wedding. After a series of flops, he meets Sydney (Jason Segel), but when they become inseparable the new best friend threatens to endanger his pending marriage.

MONSTERS V ALIENS: The latest 3D animated Dreamworks creation directed by Conrad (“Shrek II”) Vemon and Rob (“Shark Tales”) Letterman. The plot has a little girl hit by space debris turning into a giant monster, then whisked to a government compound where she finds a group of other monsters. Now, this group of rag tag Monsters must become super-heroes and save the world from aliens bent on killing everyone.

OBSESSED: A sexy office temporary worker named Lisa , (Ali Larter), begins stalking a happily married asset manager. But Derek (Idris Elba) won’t budge to the stalkers advances and soon he and his wife (Beyonce Knowles) must protect themselves from Lisa’s wrath.

SOLOIST: Here’s a real life tearjerker… the true cinematic story of violin prodigy Nathaniel Ayers (Jimmie Foxx) who after two years at Julliard ends up on the streets battling schizophrenia. Robert Downey Jr. plays a journalist wandering skid row who hears the strings coming from a bedraggled figure.

STAR TREK: It’s the dawn of a new Trekkie craze as J.J. Abrams directs, “Star Trek (2009),” which tells the origin of Captain Kirk , Mr. Spock and the crew before they take the USS Enterprise to places not boldly gone before. A sequel is already in the works.

UP: Pixer and Disney Digital 3D team for what’s already generating five star reviews from critics who have seen advance showings. Here’s the story: A 78-year-old balloon salesman ties thousands of the air-filled objects to his house lifting off to South America. Unfortunately, the home-made aircraft has a stowaway --- an eight year old explorer (voice by Christopher Plummer). Pete (“Monsters Inc.”) Docter directs.
