WEEKEND FIRST: Weekly Movie Comings And Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – It’s Oscar Nomination time. Not surprisingly, “Avatar” has tied for the most nominations (nine) . The now on DVD, “Hurt Locker” received nine noms also. “Inglourious Basterds” picked up eight, while “Up in the Air” grabbed six nominations, followed by, “Precious” (6), “Up” (5), “District Nine” (4), “Star Trek” (4), “Nine” (4), “Princess and the Frog” (4), “Crazy Heart” (3), “Young Victoria” (3) and “An Education” (3).
Both “Avatar” and “Blind Side,” which were Best Picture candidates are still playing widely at many Marquee Cinemas and the still 3-D fantastic journey on Pandora still plays in 3-D at many other cinemas. Other Best Picture nominees are on screen too --- “Up in the Air” (Cinema Huntington, Park Place Stadium); “An Education” (Cinema Huntington) and “Precious” (Cinemark Huntington Mall)
Now that, “Avatar” has taken, the crown of the #1 grossing flick of all time, topping James Cameron’s “Titanic,” the question is --- how long will it stay #1 at the botoffice? See BUZZ below.
MAINSTREAM: Dear John, From Paris With Love
CONTINUING LIMITED (Non- Exclusive): Up in the Air (Cinema, Park Place);
EXCLUSIVE: An Education (Cinema), Young Victoria (Cinema);
FLASHBACK MONDAY: Feb. 8, North by Northwest; Feb. 15, Ghostbusters II; Feb. 22, 2001: A Space Odyssey; March 1, E.T.; March 8, Breakfast at Tiffany’s ; March 15, Lost Boys; March 22, Good Bad & Ugly; March 29, Breakfast club; April 4-5, Gone With the Wind; April 12, Godfather; April 19, Citizen Kane; April 26, The Shining.
SPECIAL EVENTS: January 27, Metropolitan Opera, Der Rosenkavalier (Encore), 6:30 p.m. (Cinemark); January 30, Bold & Fresh (OReilly/Beck) Tour 2010, 8 p.m. $25.00 (Cinemark) ; Feb 4, Prairie Home Companion, 8 p.m. (Live), Encore, Feb. 9 (Cinemark) ; Feb 11 & 14, Otello, Verdi, Salzburg Festival, 7 p.m. at select Marquee Cinemas locations; Feb 25 & 28, Don Quixote, Minkus, Marinsky Theatre, 7 p.m. at select Marquee Cinemas locations;
ADVANCE MIDNIGHT SCREENINGS: None;
HEADS UP ENDS SOON WARNING*: The Legion, Eli, Tooth Fairy, Lovely Bones and Sherlock Holmes will be bidding farewell to the big screen. As for “Blind Side,” the best pic nomination along with Bullock’s nomination for Best Actress means that pic will be at a theatre somewhere until after the awards ceremony. (*Predicted by HNN Editor)
BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ…. Will Valentine’s Day weekend be the time frame that breaks Avatar’s reign as number one on the Boxoffice popularity derby? Frankly, I do not expect either “Dear John” or “From Paris with Love” to knock “Avatar” for atop the pack. However, the Anthony Hopkins/ Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt new invention of “The Werewolf” (opens Feb. 12) has a shot. It’s a remake of the 1941 flick of the same name and has both positives (performances and visuals) and downers (slow pacing). Ms. Blunt (also staring in Young Victoria) reportedly threw up at the premiere
MORE BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ … Ironically, Leonardo (“Titanic”) DiCaprio joins with Emily Mortimer and Mark Ruffalo star “Shutter Island,” a thriller about a female psychotic killer escaping the asylum. It has been testing off the roof. (Opens Feb. 19)….. then, on Feb. 26, still another horror re-make, “The Crazies.” The sweetheart month wraps with Bruce Willis/Tracy Morgan in “Cop Out,” so, my prediction would be that if “Werewolf” doesn’t beat “Avatar” , the Pandora planet 3-D visual feast will get more and more surges from the nine Academy Award nominations. Translation: It may be Tim Burton’s artistic vision of “Alice in Wonderland” (March 5) that finally bests “Avatar.”
