WEEKEND FIRST: Weekly Movie Comings And Goings
By Tony Rutherford
Huntingtonnews.net Entertainment Editor
Huntington, WV (HNN) – “Dear John” deservedly on a pre-Valentine’s Day weekend coupled with “Super Bowl” parties pulled women and couples to the theatres, thus, dumping “Avatar” from the top spot. However, “Avatar” finished a strong second. Don’t count the multi-Academy Award nominated 3D movie out; it could sneak back in the #1 boxoffice spot.
MAINSTREAM: Percy Jackson, Valentine’s Day, The Wolfman
CONTINUING LIMITED (Non- Exclusive): Up in the Air (Cinema, Park Place);
EXCLUSIVE: Crazy Hearts (Marquee Pullman); An Education (Cinema); Young Victoria (Cinema);
FLASHBACK MONDAY: Feb. 15, Ghostbusters II; Feb. 22, 2001: A Space Odyssey; March 1, E.T.; March 8, Breakfast at Tiffany’s ; March 15, Lost Boys; March 22, Good Bad & Ugly; March 29, Breakfast club; April 4-5, Gone With the Wind; April 12, Godfather; April 19, Citizen Kane; April 26, The Shining.
SPECIAL EVENTS: Feb 11 & 14, Otello, Verdi, Salzburg Festival, 7 p.m. at select Marquee Cinemas locations; Wednesday Feb. 17/Thursday Feb. 18, Celine Through the Eyes of the World, digital concert, Marquee Pullman and Marquee Southridge, 7 p.m. ($16); Feb 25 & 28, Don Quixote, Minkus, Marinsky Theatre, 7 p.m. at select Marquee Cinemas locations;
ADVANCE MIDNIGHT SCREENINGS: The Wolfman, 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 Cinemark Huntington Mall
HEADS UP ENDS SOON WARNING*: The Legion, Eli, Tooth Fairy, Lovely Bones , An Education, When in Rome, It’s Complicated, and Young Victoria will be bidding farewell to the big screen. As for “Blind Side,” the best pic nomination along with Bullock’s nomination for Best Actress means that pic will be at a theatre somewhere until after the awards ceremony. (*Predicted by HNN Editor)
BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ…. Since “Avatar” has already been displaced by the feel good weeper, “Dear John” at the top of the boxoffice, will “Valentine’s Day” (the movie and the weekend) be a time frame that holds off the Oscar nominated, repeat viewing favorite Avatar from another bid at number one on the Boxoffice popularity derby? Eating my words, “Dear John” bumped off “Avatar” (and after watching it I could see why… and seeing the LINES to get in), but “John” must compete with “Valentine’s Day” demographically.
But, “The Wolfman” and “Percy Jackson” target young males and horror/sci-fic fans, which will also fracture some of those potential repeat visitors to Pandora. Anthony Hopkins/ Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt new invention of “The Wolfwolf” (opens Feb. 12) has a shot. It’s a remake of the 1941 flick of the same name and has both positives (performances and visuals) and downers (slow pacing). Ms. Blunt (also staring in Young Victoria) reportedly threw up at the premiere
MORE BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ … Ironically, Leonardo (“Titanic”) DiCaprio joins with Emily Mortimer and Mark Ruffalo star “Shutter Island,” a thriller about a female psychotic killer escaping the asylum. It has been testing off the roof. (Opens Feb. 19)….. then, on Feb. 26, still another horror re-make, “The Crazies.” The sweetheart month wraps with Bruce Willis/Tracy Morgan in “Cop Out,” and, March opens with a 3D Tim Burton inventive version of “Alice in Wonderland.” Except for the Oscar ceremony, the studios (and multiplexes) are officially moving past the record-breaking Christmas 2009 period.
