'The Princess of Rome, Ohio' Invades Huntington, Columbus
by HNN Staff
Huntington (HNN) – When the curtain goes up on the Columbus Fringe Festival a teenage princess from a small Ohio town will take the stage. Jonathan Joy's new play "The Princess of Rome, Ohio" will make its world premiere in Columbus May 20 and 21, 2005 at the Columbus Dance Theatre as part of the 1st annual CFF. But first the show will preview for Huntington audiences this Tuesday May 17, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Huntington Museum of Art.
Joy's award winning plays include a variety of work that focuses on small town America and the clash between traditional and contemporary values. His short play "The Gentleman Caller" was recently produced in San Francisco and a portion of the play was printed in the New York Times (Sunday April 3 Arts & Leisure section)
This is the first time his written work will be produced in Columbus but not the first time Joy will be in front of a Columbus audience. After graduating from Marshall University Theatre in 1998 he went to work as an actor for the Phoenix Theatre Circle under the direction of Steven Andersen.
"Steven gave me my first big break. He showed me that I could make a career doing what I love. I can't wait to get back to Columbus," says Joy, who grew up in southern Ohio and now teaches theatre at Shawnee State University and produces plays with Free Spirit Productions.
The Princess of Rome, Ohio is a fifteen-year-old girl named Hattie who dreams of getting away from here rural roots and her dysfunctional family. The play is an outrageous front porch Appalachian comedy that tackles growing up and relationships and features lots of interesting small town characters. It is recommended for ages 16 & up.
