Wausau, WI (HNN) -- The documentary film "Hunted Like Animals" will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, In Room 233 at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County in Wausau.
A discussion will follow the showing and will include the filmmaker, New York-based Rebecca Sommer, via speaker phone. The film documents the genocide against the Hmong in Laos. It was shown last year and brought back by popular demand; many Hmong refugees live in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Sponsored by UWMC's Multicultural Resource Center, the screening and discussion are free and open to the public. UWMC is located at 518 South 7th Avenue in Wausau.
Last year when the Multicultural Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County sponsored a showing of the film "Hunted Like Animals," the viewers were so moved that they asked for another showing this year.
During the Vietnam war, many Hmong joined the CIA's anti-communist efforts. When the war ended, those who did not escape went into hiding in the jungles of Laos. Some 30 years later, they are still mercilessly hunted, attacked, raped tortured and killed by the Vietnamese and Lao military…with the genocide intensifying since 2004.
Sommer's film seeks to speak for these desperate people and bring international attention to their plight. In her film she interviews Lao refugees who fled the military aggression and speak first hand about the atrocities. It's a moving, powerful film by an international rights advocate, filmmaker and contributor and news source for www.huntingtonnews.net.
