California Legislator Presents Free Screening of 'Hunted Like Animals' on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in Sacramento, CA

The Rebecca Sommer documentary on the plight of Hmong refugees in Southeast Asia, "Hunted Like Animals", will be screened at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007 at the Crest Theatre, 1013 K Street in Sacramento, California. The program has been arranged by California Assemblyman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento.
Sommer described how the film was created: "I traveled in 2005 and 2006 to the Hmong refugee camp Huay Nam Khao (White Water), Petchabun, in Thailand, where I filmed the Hmong refugees who fled armed conflict and genocide in Laos. Additional original High 8 footage was shot by the Hmong still hiding in the Laotian mountains themselves, and was brought out of remote mountain military zones, and then out of Laos, under the most difficult conditions by the human rights fact-finding commission (FFC). I included this footage into my film, it is evidence. It gives us just a glimpse of the atrocities the Hmong people in hiding are struggling to live through. US based Hmong organizations and Hmong leaders supported this film with additional information and translation help. I am particularly grateful for the Hmong Lao Human Rights Council support -- they ensured that translations are accurate, so that the voice of their people is heard in my film."
Rebecca Sommer is leading the Indigenous Department USA, of the Society for Threatened Peoples International, a NGO in consultative status to the UN (ECOSOC), and in participatory status with the Council of Europe, and the founder of Earth Peoples.
The documentary is part of Earth Peoples's video series --- to raise awareness on indigenous peoples and ethnic minority issues. www.earthpeoples.org
