Huntington (HNN) — If you're looking for tasty Sugar Flaked Ham Sandwiches, then don't forget Cam's Ham at 1st Street and 8th Avenue. Tim Grubbs, owner of Cam's Ham Restaurante, says "It's a good sandwich. It has been for years."
Q: "How long has Cam's Ham been in business?"
A: "50 Plus Years. It was originally started by Campbell Hague, and [later] it passed from my father-in-law to my wife and I about 4 years ago."
"We kinda lucked in to Cam's Ham because it was an established restaurant. Business starved for a little bit. But my wife and I over the last 4 years have bought advertising, kept at it with clean [restaurante], good service and [good] product. We've got more people coming in every day. I mean I've got customers that bring me Coke products to display, because we collect. There's a lot of little things that keep folk coming."
Q: "Have you change anything since you took over the business?"
A: "Everything is exactly the same. The products are all made exactly the same with the same recipes. We make home-made Onion Rings, Salads, Bar-B-Q, and of course Sugar Flaked Ham Sandwiches. We added a few things, like Chicken Nuggets for the Kids."
"I have people every week coming in [that are] 35-40 years old that used to come here as a kid. People who've move away come back for 3 things: Stewarts Hotdogs, Ginos Pizza and Cam's Sugar Flaked Ham."
Q: "What are your goals for the Cam's Ham business?"
A: "I'd like to have about 4 or 5 of them. That's what we're looking for."
Q: "What would you say has been your key to success in the competative restaurante business?"
A: "Probably Tradition, Quality and Service. You order a Ham sandwich here and it takes 60 seconds, and the product is good."
"We have the best home-made onion rings in the tri-state area. We have new people comin in, about 4 or 5 a week that have heard about our onion rings. Plus, we deliver now if you order $50 or more. We deliver all the time to St. Mary's and Cabell Huntington."
Q: "Any advice for those business owners just starting out?"
A: "You just gotta work hard at it. Put your time in and take care of it.
You've got to be willing to sacrifice. Keep your products the same. Be consistent. As long as you have good service and good quality, you should make it."
