Beckley, WV (HNN) — A Kohl's department store will be constructed on the site of the former Lowe's store in Cranberry Creek Plaza on Eisenhower Drive in Beckley, HNN has learned. The old Lowe's store building has been demolished. A spokeswoman for Kohl's in Wisconsin could not confirm the information about the new Kohl's store, saying corporate policy determines release dates of information about new department stores. The spokeswoman said a Kohl's department store will open October 2005 in Clarksburg.
The city of Beckley planning and zoning commission approved plans for the Kohl's store on Tuesday, July 5, 2005. The action met no opposition, according to Bob Cannon, Beckley's code enforcement officer. The chain currently has department stores in Barboursville and Charleston. According to the Kohl's web site, department stores average 86,500 square feet in size and feature apparel, shoes and accessories for women, men and children; also luggage, small appliances and home products like bedding.
Lowe's vacated the store last year and built a new store in a new part of Cranberry Creek Plaza, which is being developed by Joe Paramore of Paramount Development Corp., Myrtle Beach, S.C. Paramore said Kohl's considered the old Lowe's facility, but decided it didn't suit the needs of the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based national department store chain.
Paramount Development is also building a state-of-the-art cinema complex in the center in conjunction with Beckley-based Marquee Cinemas Inc. Curtis E. McCall, CEO of Marquee Cinemas Inc., said the Galleria 14 complex will open next spring. Marquee Cinemas developed the multiplex in Huntington's Pullman Square.
