Airbag Prevents Serious Injury in Huntington Traffic Accident

Huntington (HNN) — An accident early Monday afternoon, April 18, 2005 at the corner of 10th Street West and Adams Avenue caused extensive damage to a Jeep and Grand Am, but thankfully the only obvious injury appeared to be burns from a deploying airbag.

Mitch Suterland was driving East on Adams Avenue when the accident happened. "We were behind the white Jeep" when "the black Grand Am headed East on Adams struck the Jeep."
 
The impact sent the Grand Am off the roadway and into the middle of a vacant lot sometimes used for athletic practices at West Middle School. Police declined to provide additional information other than the accident was "still under investigation." A representative of the H.P.D. said the report would not be available until Tuesday after it was reviewed by the shift commander.
 
The driver of the Jeep, who refused to be identified, told HNN that the woman driving the Black Grand Am, though taken by EMS to the hospital, appeared to have suffered only "burns" from the deployment of the airbag, which apparently prevented more serious injuries.
 
In fact, the unidentified woman driving the Jeep was overheard asking Sutherland, "did you see me stop?" The witness indicated she had stopped.
