Huntington, WV (HNN) -- Accepting a ride to the doctor cost a man the
proceeds of his Social Security check and left him bleeding on the streets
of Huntington.
About 11:30 a.m. Nov. 3, 2006, a 54- year- old man stood near the Papa
John’s Pizza lot at Hal Greer Blvd. and Ninth Avenue. A black male estimated
to be in his 30s drove past and asked, “how you doin’?” The older man asked
for a ride to the eye doctor at Tenth Street and Fifth Avenue.
The driver stopped and after the passenger sat down, he told the driver he
would “give him a few bucks” if he took him to the Sunoco station at 20th
Street and Ninth Avenue to cash his Social Security check. After cashing the
check, the driver and his passenger drove to Walnut Street where they went
inside the driver’s residence.
A second black man arrived and all three headed back to the car with the new
arrival hopping in the back seat. The driver drove to the 100 block of
Sycamore Street where he stopped near an alley.
At that time, the man in the back seat grabbed the passenger by the hair and
pulled his head back and demanded that he “give us the money.” The driver
slipped his hand into the man’s coat pocket and took the man’s wallet.
However, the man in the back seat demanded “all the money” at which time he
used a razor styled boxcutter to cut the man’s face. The police report
indicated that the laceration went from the corner of his mouth to his ear.
The victim then jumped out of the car and the vehicle sped away. A bystander
at the corner of St. Louis Avenue and Sycamore Street saw the man bleeding
and called 911. The injured man was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital for
treatment.
