The celebration started at 11 a.m. with cake being served to the first 144 people coming through the door. Phillip Bailey was the second in line to get a piece of the West Virginia birthday cake.

The celebration may be a new start for Huntington to celebrate West Virginia's birthday again. Huntington used to have a birthday celebration on the plaza with a large cake, entertainment and many activities. The event was attended by many people. Over the years it faded away.

Charles Brown was demonstrating wood turning on his lathe. Several people in the shop were watching him demonstrate his skills. Others were looking over books and many were getting the signature of an author on one of their latest books about West Virginia. Four Pole Creek was scheduled to perform later in the day.

The Downtown Depot opened in May and handles West Virginia products like Blenko Glass, pottery, candles, jewelry, toys, pillows, silk, scarves, cutting boards, wooden spoons, note cards, photographs from photographers like David Fattelah, lotions and soaps There are also some grocery items for customers.

The store is operated by Goodwill Industries.
