Huntington, WV (HNN) – Before independent out-of-market TV stations signed up for the more restrictive contracts of the "mini-networks" like The WB, WPIX, New York, pre-empted all regular programming for a video of a fireplace and a burning log on Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning.
The concept proved popular in many locations.
Joining time-honored holiday traditions such as watching “It’s a Wonderful Life,” viewers have been entertained by the Yule Log’s cozy glow and holiday music soundtrack since the first version in 1966.
Comcast Cable returns the Yule Log in high-definition video on demand for this holiday season.
The first cable service provider to carry the Yule Log on "HD On Demand," the production features a newly shot version of the log taped in 1080i (1080 inter-laced lines of resolution) video and Dolby 5.1 sound.
The HD version is so vivid, holiday guests "may think the television is throwing off heat," according to a Comcast press release.
In 2006, Comcast customers viewed the Yule Log in High Definition (HD) Video On Demand (VOD) twice the number of times as they did in standard definition (SD) , which will also be available on Comcast’s On Demand Service, according to Comcast.
The video log can be seen until January 4, 2008.
Comcast announced Dec. 5 that, according to just released data, its signature On Demand service is “exploding in popularity.” Statistics the carrier put out show that Comcast had six billion on-demand views in less than four years, one billion hours of on-demand content in 2007, 250 million views per month, and 100 views per second.
Comcast’s On Demand service has grown to feature a library of nearly 10,000 titles per month, available anytime consumers want to watch them, with the ability to fast forward, rewind and pause selections. On Demand offers a variety of choices –– from movies, music and top TV shows to popular kids, sports and lifestyle programs.
Comcast launched its HD On Demand lineup in 2006, which today offers consumers hundreds of HD choices .
Nearly 95 percent of all On Demand selections from Comcast are available at no additional charge.
