Huntington, WV (HNN) -- Marshall lost their last home softball game of the season to the University of Tulsa 2-1 at the new Dot Hicks Field on Sunday afternoon, April 27, spoiling Senior Day for Marshall seniors Rachel Folden, Samantha Rodriguez and Deanna Tourville.
After honoring Herd seniors both teams stayed scoreless for three innings. In the top of the fourth Tulsa's Vanessa Vice scored on a sacrifice fly. The Golden Hurricanes scored again in the top of the fifth when Lauren Lindsay hit a home run to be up 2-0..
Marshall's did load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rachel Folden scored from third base when batter Melanie Stoehr got hit with a pitch. That made the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning Marshall had base runners on first and second and looked as if they might be able to tie or win the game.
Tulsa's pitcher Jordan Kinard, with a worried look, had a brief mound conference with the coach. She looked relieved as Tulsa got the needed out and her teammates came out to celebrate the win. Kinard had a complete game giving up six hits and one run. She had seven strikeouts bringing her total to a team season high of 121.
The game was crucial for Marshall in the Conference USA race where they were neck and neck with Tulsa. Marshall is now 24-28 and 11-11 in Conference USA. Tulsa is 30-21 and 11-10 in Conference USA.
The 2008 home season ended with a 4-10 record making it the first completed home season at the new Dot Hicks Field which opened in March. The attendance was 402 for the last home game.
