Huntington, WV (HNN) -- The Huntington Municipal Development Authority on Thursday, May 1, 2008 took the first step in preparing the City Hall Annex Building for private redevelopment. The building, at 824 5th Ave., is owned by the HMDA.

The Authority unanimously approved a $124,477 contract for asbestos abatement with Master Mechanical, of Huntington. Thermal Solutions, of Proctorville, Oh, was the only other bidder at $365,676.

Community Development Block Grant money is paying for the work. The contract covers removal of both contaminated and non-contaminated material.

"Over 90% of what is in the building is considered contaminated," said HMDA executive director Bill Toney at today's special call meeting. Triad Engineering, of Teays Valley, did the contamination testing.

"The cleanup is crucial to the HMDA's plans to sell the building," said Toney. "We have two people who want to see the building and they will probably make a bid on it when this work is done." He wouldn't name the two prospective buyers.

Toney couldn't give a time line for the work's completion, but said the company would begin work 60 days after it received notice to proceed.
