Huntington, WV (HNN) – Police have identified the victim of an early Thursday morning, May 1, 2008 shooting that happened around the 19th Street area. According to the initial dispatch, an individual spotted a man lying on the sidewalk near a corner of Ninth Avenue and 19th Street who had apparently been shot in the head.
Three detectives were immediately called to the scene. Thursday afternoon the victim was identified as Timothy Taylor, of Detroit, Michigan.
Currently the Huntington Police investigations unit are asking for information and interviewing possible suspects. If you have information on this case, please call 304-696-4420.
One Marshall University student told HNN Thursday afternoon that he grew up in the neighborhood. But at the time – 10-15 years ago --- it was a good place to live. Now, with an abundance of drug dealers, drug users and prostitutes in and around this area, residents will not speak out for fear of retaliation. In fact, according to another printed report, a neighbor said that people come from Milton on the east to Kentucky on the west to buy drugs in the area.
Since the police have not identified a motive, the killing has not been specifically linked to drugs. Taylor’s death means that Huntington has averaged one killing per month since October 2007. Expanding the perimeter to include Cabell County, the toll has been twelve.
Huntington, which endured 14 killings in 2005 -- including the death of the four teens on Charleston Avenue -- went almost two years without a firearm involved homicide. The quadruple murder remains unsolved, as does the December 2007 murder of Marshall University student Leah Hickman, which attracted national cable news attention.
