Huntington, WV (HNN) - Huntington High School baseball coach William "Toby," Holbrook stepped down from coaching after 44 years at the end of the sectional baseball game at Spring Valley on Wednesday evening.
At the end of the game Spring Valley had won the sectional trophy with an 11-3 over Huntington and the Timberwolves were celebrating. Huntington High's baseball season had ended.
At this game a second celebration took place with the announcement that Coach Holbrook was retiring from coaching.
Coach Holbrook that had coached baseball almost three times the number of years of the ages of the players on the field were was the center of attention recognized by both Spring Valley players and coaches and Huntington High players and coaches
Coach Holbrook was greeted with hand shakes and hugs from both teams. Many friends wished him well. Others were having pictures made with him and wanting his autograph. It was certainly an emotional moment in West Virginia high school baseball not often seen between competing schools.
Randy Payton from the Wayne County News and Grant Traylor from the Herald Dispatch were interviewing Coach Holbrook as he recalled memories spanning those four plus decades of coaching.
Coach Holbrook wanted to finish out the year to help build a good base for the Highlander baseball team next year. This year he was working with a young team coaching them during the loss to Spring Valley so they would be better next year.
Coach Holbrook started coaching at Cammack Junior High, then went to Huntington High and then to Huntington East and continued as the head baseball coach at the new Huntington High when they consolidated. The Highlander baseball field is named after him and Coach Jack Cook.
