Huntington, WV (HNN) – A 19-year-old man lies at Cabell Huntington Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, following a two hour Sunday afternoon, May 11, standoff in the vicinity of Marshall University with law enforcement officers. Rashawn Harless is listed in serious but stable condition according to reports.

After 5 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2008, Huntington residents on Seventh Avenue, a few blocks from Marshall University, found themselves near a gun fight. Based on initial reports, customers alerted Marshall University Police inside the Hal Greer Boulevard and Sixth Avenue convenience store of a man there with a hand gun.

When Huntington Police arrive, MUPD had already began chasing the suspect west on Sixth Avenue. The man ran between houses and businesses between Hal Greer Blvd. and 14th Street and Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The suspect fired at law enforcement; officers returned fire.

Residents living in the area were advised to remain inside and pedestrians were moved back to a secure perimeter.

According to Police Chief Skip Holbrook, the suspect fled to behind a blue dumpster in the vicinity of the 1500 block of Seventh Avenue. Neighbors heard gunfire exchanged, but the area remained barricaded off until shortly after 7 p.m.

Members of The SWAT Team, Sheriff’s Deputies, HPD, MUPD and W.Va. State Police all surrounded the scene. The normally serene neighborhood not more than a block from the American Legion where Hillary Clinton spoke earlier in the spring and near St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Schools told reporters they were scared to witness a shooting incident in their neighborhood.

Holbrook told reporters that after 7 p.m. the SWAT team advanced and removed the man from behind the dumpster. He suffered a gun shot wound and was transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Shortly before 11 p.m., police investigators remained at the crime scene. It’s also unclear whether the wound came from law enforcement fire or was self inflicted. Two MUPD officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome.
